Rabbi's Message
In Parshat Vayigash we finally reach a resolution for the tension in the story of Joseph and his brothers. I imagine no one would fault Joesph had he taken revenge on his brothers for what they had done to him. Instead, he chose to mend and heal the rift. Joseph put the family back together.

At this very moment we are experiencing rifts all over the place. In every inch of our society we feel the pains of strife. In our community we are reeling from the uptick in attacks against our people and our faith.
It is time to put the family back together.

On New Years Day I had the privilege to experience a level of Jewish unity I have not seen for some time. At the Global Siyum Hashas, nearly one hundred thousand people gathered in person at Met Life Stadium (with so many more joining virtually worldwide) to pray, study and sing together. For those few hours I was there, I did not think about threats against us or about the problems we may have. I only thought of the beauty of what binds all Jews together.

We need a whole lot more of those moments.

Dear Etz Chaim Members,

In celebration of Chanukah this year, Congregation Etz Chaim would like to offer, once again, a special Israel Bonds program to our families with children under 18 years of age. As a reminder of the miracles we celebrate on Chanukah, and as a reminder of the miracle of the State of Israel’s existence, Development Corporation for Israel (Israel Bonds) and Congregation Etz Chaim have come together again to partner on a program which will enable your children, who qualify, to receive a $100 Israel Bond for Chanukah, which will be purchased by Congregation Etz Chaim.

There are two ways that you can qualify for this program:
1. If your children were not able to participate last year or
2. You are a new member to the Synagogue

If your child received an Israel Bond last year from Congregation Etz Chaim and is still under 18 years old and would like to participate again, you may purchase an Israel Bond for your children and Congregation Etz Chaim will MATCH that purchase with an additional Israel Bond up to $100.00, AS A GIFT, to your child.

In order to participate in this program, YOU MUST contact the local Israel Bonds office, by January 15th, to register your child (children) so that the bonds can be processed. You can reach the local Israel Bonds office at 800-404-3234, or [email protected] , or at Development Corporation for Israel, 30 W. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Suite 206, Livingston, NJ 07039.

If you have not yet made an investment in Israel Bonds, we would encourage you to look at our current investment rates and speak to your Registered Representative for more information.

When our community is threatened, we stand up and we stand together.

That's why, this Sunday, together with JCRC-NY as well as ADL-NY, AJC-NY, and the New York Board of Rabbis, we're bringing our community together. We will march through our streets - proud, united, and strong.

The 1.5 million Jews of our great city and region will not stand down.
We will not be intimidated.

Join us as we say No to hate and No to fear.

Meet at Foley Square this Sunday, January 5th, at 11:00 am . We will march across the Brooklyn Bridge, followed by a rally in Columbus Park (near Cadman Plaza).
