St. Philip Catholic Church News & Updates

September 15, 2023

From the Desk of Fr. Donahue

Dear Friends,

Peace to you from the Rectory! The U.S. Bishops are doing something new, something they are calling a National Eucharistic Revival! Please have a look at their website, I love how it begins: Our world is hurting. We all need healing, yet many of us are separated from the very source of our strength. Jesus Christ invites us to return to the source and summit of our faith in the celebration of the Eucharist.

This revival – which has actually been underway since last year – begins now in earnest on the parish level, and will continue for the next two years. Even without any prior planning, it is neat to see how many of our parish events already align with this national movement, such as:

Forty Hours of Eucharistic Adoration in October. The extra time spent in adoration of the Lord will certainly revive our appreciation of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

Learning the Latin Gloria. The sense of mystery that comes from using an ancient language at Mass will contribute to our sense of mystery before Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, the ever Ancient One who makes all things new.

A Taste of St. Philip. Jesus’ desire to unify His people through Holy Communion will be seen in all its glory at our diverse social event on September 30.

This is just what our nation needs, a Eucharistic Revival! I look forward to our parish participat-ing in this revival in the weeks and months to come! St. Philip the Apostle – pray for us!

Yours in Christ, Fr. Donahue

Update: Latin Gloria Rollout

We continue to make progress on the Latin Gloria rollout, which we will start learning in the coming weeks. Soon the church pews will contain laminated copies of the Latin text and music, with the translated words in English and Spanish. This effort with the Latin Gloria is to fulfill the complete instructions on vernacular Masses, found in the Vatican II document the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, in Articles 36 and 54:

Particular law remaining in force, the use of the Latin language is to be preserved in the Latin rites…But since the use of the mother tongue, whether in the Mass, the administration of the sacraments, or other parts of the liturgy, frequently may be of great advantage to the people…a suitable place may be allotted to their mother tongue… Nevertheless, steps should be taken so that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them…

Food and Much More at A Taste of St. Philip

Celebrate the many cultures present in our parish community at the first Taste of St. Philip! Join us on Sept 30 from 3-7 pm in Hayden Hall and on the lawn for food, family, and fun! The Taste of St. Philip will feature seven different cuisines. Menu information for all the great cuisine will be coming soon.

Food vouchers will be on sale after all Masses each weekend until the event. Stop by to learn more about this exciting new celebration at St. Philip. As this is a new event, please get your vouchers early to help prepare and ensure an ample supply of food.

The evening will feature carnival games for children of all ages and a cake walk. In addition, due to popular demand, Father Briggs will host a wine-tasting event. There were will two sessions - at 4pm and 6pm. Seating for wine tasting is limited. Tickets are $20.

The drawing for the parish raffle will be held at the end of the Taste of St. Philip. Tickets have been mailed to parishioners' homes and can also be purchased after all weekend Masses leading up the event.

Signup Continues for "Walking With Purpose"; Begins Sept. 25

Plan to join us Monday evenings at 7pm starting September 25 for "Walking with Purpose," a program that meets women right where they are, hands them a cup of coffee, and transforms their hearts.

We are thrilled to announce that we will offer two Bible studies this season.

  • Opening Your Heart, our foundational study, is perfect for a woman new to WWP (with or without Bible study experience). We invite you to be amazed at how scripture applies to your everyday life.
  • Touching the Divine (Second Edition), a study of the Gospel of John, is designed for women who have participated in WWP in the past. This study draws us into a deeper, loving relationship with Jesus as we reflect on His life and personality.

The books are $40 and you can pay in cash or check to St. Philip. Contact Kim at the Rectory to let us know you’ll be there. 703-573-3808.

Altar Server Training Sept. 23

One more session of Altar Server Training left! All current altar servers, and any young men above 4th grade who wish to join in serving at the Our Lord’s Altar, are required to attend a training session. The next training sessions will be held on Saturday, September 23, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Church. Lunch will be provided. Please call the office to sign up. Thank you!

Prepare and Vote: Read Bishops’ Letter and Other VCC Resources

In the coming weeks and months, voters will elect members to all 140 seats in the Virginia General Assembly, as well as other offices in some localities. Much is at stake!

Early voting begins September 22. Election Day is November 7. New General Assembly maps are in effect for this year’s elections.

To help you prepare, please visit our Election Resource hub. There you can view, download and print the following materials, three of which are newly released and one of which is re-issued:

Each of these resources is authorized for parish use and fits onto one sheet of paper for convenient printing. Each is also available in Spanish on our Election Resource hub

Please review these materials. Share them with family and friends too, and remind them to pray, form their consciences and vote!

Forty Hours of Eucharistic Adoration Thursday, October 12

As in years past, we will have nearly continual Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from that evening until the following Saturday night. During Forty Hours parishioners will have the opportunity to spend extended time before the Holy Eucharist in adoration.

To assist us in this privileged time with the Lord, the featured speaker for our Forty Hours this year is Fr. Philip Scott, FJ. Fr. Philip is the Founder of the Family of Jesus the Healer, a community of priests, brothers and sisters who are praying to be healed and formed into a family by the Divine Family (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). They pray to live out in a prophetic manner their baptismal calling to follow Jesus Christ and be His instruments of healing for families; both the individual domestic family, and also the broader family of the Church and society.

As the featured speaker, Fr. Philip will be focusing on two topics in his bilingual talks: Adoration IS on earth as it is IN HEAVEN; and, The life of a Son vs. a life of an orphan. All this starts on Thursday, October 12, after the 7 pm Mass, so mark your calendars and join other parishioners next month as we all adore Jesus and learn with our guest speaker, Fr. Philip Scott..
