We all know that we're more likely to speak our minds on social media. Anyone can give their two cents freely and receive little to no backlash for comments or statements made, whether good or bad.

As the online social media phenomenon has grown, so has the ability for people to post hateful, discriminatory comments.
Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have policies in place to discourage this type of posting, however, it has had little effect and they have continually been under scrutiny for the perceived lack of effort in removing hateful posts.

The European Union, a
global p romoter for eq ual rights, has now partnered with social media and tech giants to help combat the amount of discriminatory messages posted online.
The European Union has created a code of conduct to hold social media and technology companies to the following standards:
  • Any posting that is reported as hate speech must be investigated within 24 hours of the report.

  • Companies must have a clear policy and procedure on resolving complaints and be able to identify what hate speech is.

  • Companies will be required to cooperate with other platforms, ensuring that all relevant information is shared.
  • Companies will be asked to work with civil society organizations that will be active in flagging hateful content.
This will not stop online hate speech, but it will help regulate content posted online.

If you are an individual who has been a target of hateful, discriminatory posts online and you need a solution, please contact our firm and learn how we can assist you.
