Euva Anderson at The Derby House (Encinitas, CA) seated before one of her self-portrait paintings; The Derby, owned together with writer Garth Murphy for many decades, is known as the oldest standing house in town where railroad workers first lived as tracks were laid over a century ago; it has since been a sub-cultural hub on the surrounding property with a very private sanctuary or time capsule of Euva inside, showcasing some of her most iconic paintings; image credit Simonne Villamichel Borel.

"If you remember I am not a member of any art circle or clique. They don’t appeal to me. I naturally court lovers of art from the heart. I know many acclaimed artists but not through art. I am well known for being an uninterested unknown who appreciates art for art’s sake. I challenge the means because my means are limitless.

What is attractive about you is that you are courageous and enjoy what you do or so it seems to me. I am from an old world which has basically disappeared. Growing up, artists never aspired to be rich or famous. They could barely pay their rent or feed a family without travail. They were always one painting or two behind in commissions yet they had joie de vivre and a romantic if harsh way of life, a noble generosity to share. No one expected to ever get rich on painting. It was a hand to mouth curse of an existence. Perhaps it still is but artists nowadays seem to equate art with riches and fame and are always trying to please the trend. At least that is what I started seeing in the late 70’s and early 80’s when Hype Art, as I called it, became popular. Mary Boone and the Swiss Banker were responsible for that crop of large painting artists in NY during that era, all of a sudden behaving like agents for Celebrity Stars. No generosity, too much blah blah blah, full of themselves believing their own myth and guarding their “work". They became business artists with Andy Warhol at the front. It was a bit of a turn off. All the romanticism died. All of a sudden galleries became sterile and their owners became businessmen. Armani suits and ties, a Rolex and expensive shoes were the new uniform. I may be out of sync because I left all that behind. I have no idea how the art world is now."
