Your Community Brief from Evans High School
Monday, July 20, 2020

Our 2020/21 school year will now begin to take some form of shape. What is needed now is for all stakeholders including parents, students, faculty & staff and community members to  provide input in the coming days. This feedback via the form of an official OCPS survey will guide school and district-based personnel with critical information to help decide the next steps to determine what our school instructional delivery will be for our Trojans. What we now know is that a decision has been made from our School Board which approved the 2020/21 Florida's Optional Innovative Reopening Plan to include an Innovative model called OCPS LaunchEd@Home.

As a result of the decision and the diligent work of our board, parents will now be allowed to make the choice for their child's instructional model.

The choices include:
  • Face-to-Face - On campus, regular schedule, five days a week as required by the state in an emergency order.
  • OCVS Virtual - A fully accredited OCPS school for 10 years. This provides location, time and pace flexibility.
  • Innovative - OCPS LaunchEd@Home provides live stream for each class, following a traditional bell schedule. This option provides location flexibility, while also offering continuity of student experience and campus connections, as well as wrap-around support services.
In the meantime, a choice registration survey has been sent out to parents to choose one of the three learning models. To maximize safety efforts, we encourage parents to select the OCPS LaunchEd@Home, if able to keep their child at home.

More information will be forthcoming in the days to come. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out as we are here to support you in this decision or provide guidance.

GO Trojans!

The School Board of Orange County held a special board meeting at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center while also utilizing virtual conferencing Friday, July 17. These are the highlights of the meeting:

School Board approves 2020/21 Florida's Optional Innovative Reopening Plan (6 to 2) to include an Innovative model called OCPS LaunchEd@Home. The School Board also agreed to seek a waiver from the state to allow local discretion regarding the start of school, based on local data. The start date is, tentatively, Friday, August 21

Below is a comparison of the three instructional models that parents can choose from for the fall semester, which will tentatively start Friday, August 21. The Choice Registration Form is now available (link just below) and will be open until Friday, July 24. If the registration process is not completed by Friday, July 24, the student will be registered to attend their zoned or assigned school utilizing the Face-to-Face instructional model.

** FAQs

This Innovative Plan will be submitted to the state for approval. The waiver request will also be submitted. In the meantime, a choice registration survey will begin today for parents to choose one of the three learning models. To maximize safety efforts, we encourage parents to select the OCPS LaunchEd@Home, if able to keep their child at home. An assignment preference survey will also be sent to teachers to indicate which model they prefer to work in.

You can review the school reopening details here.

Reminder: All board meetings are live streamed on the School Board's YouTube page and will be accessible from web browsers on computers or mobile devices. To find the live stream, visit www.boardmeetings.ocps.net.

Trojan Athletics trojanathletics

Evans Athletic Department is extremely excited about the start of our sports programs for the new school year. We have jump started our preseason conditioning and training for Football, Volleyball and Spirit Cheer. We have implemented several safety procedures for our athletes and coaches as required by the OCPS Athletics Department (social distancing guidelines).

Our coaches and athletes have been nothing short of amazing during the preseason training sessions! We could not be more appreciative of their attitude, support and focus on delivering the best preseason training to our students.

Our Head Athletic Trainer, Ms. Edwards, has been supporting our athletes both remotely and in limited hours at our training facility. Remarkably, we made rapid changes and procedures to allow our students to begin training and conditioning.

Evans High School athletes that are interested in participating in an FHSAA sanctioned sport at Evans High School you must have an up to date high school physical on file with the Athletic Training Staff (middle school physicals do not transfer over). Trojan Scholar

Shania Streeter was offered a $20,000 scholarship to Harris-Stowe University very early in the year during the August 30th Tom Joyner event! Many of our Class of 2020 seniors earned scholarships last year!

Rigor in the Classrooms
Reading Skills
Pictured below during the week of September 16th, these Trojans were sharpening their reading skills in Ms. Dunkley's classroom. At the time these pictures were taken, the students were reflecting on the CRM assessment where they had to determine the theme, analyze complex characters, and comment upon the cultural experience. Data was used to establish which items needed to be addressed.

AP Environmental Science
Ms. Steadman's AP Environmental Science students built their own eco-columns last September. These AP students started an eco-columns project where they grew building columns with three chambers - the top chamber grew plants, the middle was for filtration, and the bottom chamber was aquatic and actually contain a fish and plant. The project covered standards in cycles, sustainability, human impact, biodiversity, ecological tolerance, and many more. This was a 6-week long project with data collected every week!

Remembering U.S. Congressman John Lewis from the state of Georgia (Feb. 21, 1940 - July 17, 2020)

Dr. King, with his wife, Coretta Scott King, and Mr. Lewis at right, marched from Montgomery,  Ala. to the state capitol in March 1965. From an early age, Mr. Lewis was a major figure in the civil rights movement.

Mr. Lewis,  front row left,  helped Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. center, organize the March on Washington for Jobs & Freedom in Washington, D.C., in August 1963, when Dr. King delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

Like so many successful African American leaders, Congressman Lewis knew the value of getting an education. He once spoke about the importance of books in his life and said: "I had a wonderful teacher in elementary school who told me, 'Read, my child, read, and I tried to read everything. I love books!"

Make it a great week Trojans and please continue with all recommended health safety practices!
