Maynard Evans High School Community Brief
Monday, February 8, 2021
Evans Community Member,

One can tell a great deal about a people, about a nation, by what it deems important enough to remember or prioritize.

The goal for many during Black History Month is twofold: to inspire and instill pride of self and community as well as to inspire young African Americans. When I think of the importance of Black History Month, I am reminded of this quote, "There is no more powerful force than a people steeped in their history; and there is no higher cause than honoring our struggle and ancestors by remembering."

This saying is cliché but it is undeniably true: knowledge is power, use it. On a personal note, I had more than average grades as a freshman, sophomore and junior in high school. My big turning point was during my senior year when I started working at McDonald's. When I was working there, I kept asking myself, “Why do I work so hard and get paid so little?” I also noticed that the managers did far less work then I did, but were paid more. I thought why and discovered that the only difference between them and me was that they were more educated then I was. At this point, I decided that the only way I would ever get what I wanted was by getting an education and that not going to college was not an option. From then on, I worked harder in school and graduated with honors and thus entered to learn at Bethune Cookman College and departed to serve to Orange County Public schools.

Parents, now is the time for students to lock in and commit themselves to improving their grades. Are they on the right path toward academic success? Please find out, knowledge is power, please use it to support your student needs. On behalf our 191 employees at Evans, we are here to lead, support, triage, and hold accountable our 2,500 students. However, it is time for them to tap the accelerator!

In Trojan Pride,

Mr. Bailey
Proud Principal

2021 Parent Survey
It is that time of year for us to reach out to our stakeholders requesting participation in our online survey. The Panorama Parent Survey is crucial to the overall effectiveness of our delivery models - educational, customer service, and engagement (extra-curricular). The survey will provide Evans' school leadership a view into the thinking and perceptions our stakeholders have and how to improve Evans High School.

The family survey window runs from January 14, 2021 – March 12, 2021. It will take only a few minutes to complete and is anonymous. Please click the Link below:

Rigor in the Classroom
English I with Ms. Dunkley
Ms. Dunkley’s English I classes are examining two standards: 1) Analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic mediums, including what is emphasized or absent in each treatment; 2) Analyze how an author draws on and transforms source material in a specific work through the use of collaborative breakout rooms.

Students are able to "chunk the material" and then present information learned in a jigsaw strategy fashion as Ms. Dunkley works with both online and face-to-face students in a blended model.
Ms. Edwards use of Evans new camera technology to support our LaunchEd students learning from home.
Ms. Edwards is using our newest technology addition, the Swivl camera. By using the remote marker that follows her movements, making her more mobile in the classroom, she can more easily engage with her face to face students while those on LaunchEd can see the classroom and the other students in it. She reports that her students appreciate that she is not tethered to the front of the room all the time, even though it keeps them on their toes!
Trojan Athletics
Tahj Adams Commits to St. Thomas University
Senior Tahj Adams committed to St. Thomas University. We celebrated with his college signing ceremony on Wednesday, February 3rd.
Boys and Girls Basketball
Congrats to our JV boys basketball team for their triumph over Timber Creek last week, with a mighty win!
It was also Senior Night for the Class of 2021 and they were recognized along with their friends and family before the game.

Congratulations to the girls basketball team for their outstanding performance in the 1st round of the district playoffs. Evans defeated Olympia 46 - 37 in a thrilling comeback for a victory to move to the next round. However, after a great fight to the end, they lost in the 2nd round.
Boys and Girls Soccer
The girls and boys soccer teams ended their seasons this past week in an awesome effort that ended with a loss in the first round of the district playoffs. We are extremely proud of both of our soccer teams this season and look forward to next year!
Boys Wrestling
The boys wrestling took team on the Colonial Grenadiers here in the Trojan Gym this past week. They began the night celebrating the seniors in the program. Sophomore, Tyran Schanck, won his match 11-3. The team next travels to Apopka on Thursday and then Ocoee on Saturday morning.
Coming up in Athletics
Lady Trojans, it is not too late to become members of the LAX, or Girls Track Teams. See Coach Daniley-Porter and Coach Colas respectively.
Our first track meet will be February 10th at Apopka High School, starting at 4:30pm.

School-wide, we have implemented mandatory tutoring for all athletes with low grades, every Tuesday and Thursday. This ensures that all are maintaining the schoolwide expectation of Student before Athlete.
Trojan Spirit!
Highlights for the Community . . .

This past week in the courtyard and cafeteria during lunches, our Trojans had some fun. Competition was fierce but fun in games like Family Feud, relay races and even hula hooping and limbo. Thanks for keeping up the school spirit SGA!

College Debt
The percentage of student loan borrowers with missed payments keeps rising.
Making sense of the chart: The percentage of U.S. student loan borrowers with missed payments keeps rising (gray bars). If you or your student has college plans, please take advantage of all Evans Student Services offers in the way of college financial planning. There are other options open to our Trojans beyond taking on too much debt to pay for their college which can hamper their goals after college graduation such as buying a house, buying a new car, or even getting married.
HUB Happenings
Meet our Assistant Director, Ms. Lynouse Maxime
Lynouse Maxime is a proud alumna of Evans High School! She graduated from the Florida State University with a Bachelors in Criminology and then attained a Masters in Science from Kaplan University.

Her passion for helping youth lead her to working with high school students, specifically to create better opportunities for themselves and prepare for the future. In 2013, she started Giving Back Evans Alumni; a non-profit organization for Trojan alumni. The nonprofit serves as an avenue to support, connect, and encourage students.

As the Evans Community Partnership School Assistant Director, her desire is to continue to make a difference and an impact in the Evans Community. She is passionate about the Community Partnership School’s model and believes it can change the students’ lives and the community as a whole. Ms. Maxime enjoys spending quality time with her son on the baseball field, reading, and traveling.
