EVANS WEEKLY
Issue: #6
September 7, 2018

Dear Panther Parents,

Our Evans Middle School fundraiser is taking place now.  Your child should have brought home a packet for the Yankee Candle (plus other products) fundraiser yesterday.  Please support our efforts to raise money for our school.  Among other things, I am looking to purchase a memorial plaque for our very own Leonard Evans Jr.   He did so much for our community, and I believe this would be a nice tribute to his legacy.  I also hope to place picnic tables in the back of the school, outside the cafeteria, to use for student reward picnic lunches.  We appreciate your support!!

Our first three weeks of school have come and gone.  Today is our first progress report grading period.  Grades will be viewable on HAC Wednesday morning.

MISD transportation is a privilege and we appreciate that our district provides this service to our families.  Having said that, students should be riding their designated bus, and NOT taking other buses to be with friends.  If your child needs to take a bus that is different from the one they are assigned, they need to provide a written note from a parent letting us know which bus he or she is to ride and the reason for the change on that day.  This is a safety issue and we want to make sure we take all precautions to make sure your child gets home safely each day.  Also, Student Code of Conduct is still in effect on the buses.  If a student is out of compliance, consequences will be given and suspensions from the bus are possible.  Please talk to your child about appropriate bus behavior.

Entrance into our building: Thank you for your cooperation with showing your ID in the camera and telling us who you are and why you are at Evans before we unlock the door for entrance into the building.  Please keep your ID handy because we will be asking for it again once inside.  We also need everyone to sign-in on the clipboard provided at the front desk.  This is a district expectation and we follow these procedures for the safety of our students...I think we can all agree that needs to stay a priority.

#MISDLivesKind: Our new live kind initiative is really gaining momentum.  Our students are brainstorming ways to continue to be kind and show empathy to one another.  Our students are little sponges and they are always watching what the adults around them do in certain situations.  It is our commitment to model kindness at Evans and we hope you will partner with us in this effort from home too.  The world could definitely use a little more kindness and empathy.  Thanks for being good role models for your children.

Our 8th grade Football district preview is Monday at the new MISD Stadium.  7th graders will have their preview at Ron Poe on Monday, as well.  Come out and support our Panthers!

Fall pictures will be taken at school on Tuesday, September 11th.  And our new student breakfast is on the 12th (invitation only).

Happy Friday,
Darla

      LEARNING COMMONS

One of the best ways to help your child this year is to get them to READ!!

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Gordon Korman comes a hilarious and heartfelt novel in which one middle-school troublemaker accidentally moves into the gifted and talented program-and changes everything. This funny and touching underdog story is a lovable and goofy adventure with robot fights, middle-school dances, live experiments, and statue-toppling pranks!

      SCHOOL SAFETY

A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the uniform classroom response to any incident. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by all McKinney ISD schools and District Administration and staff. Historically, schools have taken this scenario-based approach to respond to hazards and threats. Each McKinney ISD classroom is furnished with the Standard Response Protocol poster that provides teachers with readily accessible response procedures and provides information during a crisis event. The attached handout explains Standard Response Protocol that is taught to students, faculty and staff.

Please click the link below to view the Standard Response Protocol parent handout.

   STUDENT FOOD DELIVERY

Due to a variety of safety concerns related to food allergies and campus safety and security,  McKinney ISD will no longer allow students to utilize food delivery services at school. This includes services such as Uber Eats, Doordash and direct restaurant delivery. However, parents/guardians will still be permitted to drop food off for their children.

This rule does not apply to deliveries organized by McKinney ISD faculty or a teacher serving as a sponsor of a student organization. We appreciate your cooperation in our efforts to create a safe and secure environment for students.
