Thanksgiving for Light

Psalm 141

May our prayers come before you, O God, as incense, and may your presence surround and fill us, so that in union with all creation, we might sing your praise and your love in our lives. Amen.

Reading Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Word of God. Word of life.
Thanks be to God.

Lord's Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen.

O God, everything you do is wonderful, and I know it well.
Teach us your ways, O God.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light on my path.
Teach us your ways, O God.
Jesus said, Let the children come to me.
Teach us your ways, O God.

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray.
Almighty God, you give wisdom and knowledge.
Help students to study diligently and to grow in all that is good.
Support all who teach and all who learn,
that together we may know and follow your ways;
through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Gracious God, we pray for students and teachers going back to school this year. We pray for their health and safety as classrooms and schools have been modified to allow for proper social distancing and hygiene.

We pray for cafeteria workers, janitorial and office staff; Protect and keep them safe. Protect families, students and teachers as they return home each day;

We pray for students who will be doing school virtually from home; we pray that they have the resources they need to do schoolwork at home. And we pray for their parents that they would be able to balance the demands of work while watching over the academic progress of their children.

We pray for the teachers who have to switch to online learning formats that they would be able to have the resources and technology training they need. Give teachers, students, and parents the patience they need for this new type of schooling that they could all work together to accomplish what needs to be done.

We pray for the many students returning to colleges and universities whether in person or virtually. In the midst of these uncertain times, help them not to feel overwhelmed. Be with professors, parents and students alike reassuring them of your presence.  Be their companion on the journey ahead that in You they may find peace.
