Russia’s efforts to influence international public opinion have grabbed the headlines. This panel of experts will examine what we know about these efforts and their impacts. They will lay out some of the latest techniques and methodologies for understanding this phenomenon. 
Social Media and the Former Soviet Bloc

The presentation will showcase a new cross-country dataset developed with the Digital Society Project that measures levels of government censorship online, coordinated information operations by regimes both in foreign and domestic spheres, and how social media is utilized by citizens.

RT produces a variety of outputs – from outright “fake news” to genuinely innovative social media projects – and audience responses to RT's content vary. Any effective response to what RT produces, then, would most likely come as part of a package of measures aimed at addressing various broader media trends. 

Nyetwork News: Analyzing the Spread of Russian Propaganda in Western News

While there has been concern about the projection of Russian propaganda in the West through avenues such as RT, Twitter, and Facebook, there has been relatively little study of how much Russian propaganda has entered news narratives in the West. This presentation will explore new methodological approaches for translating an understanding of Russian propaganda objectives into ways of using computational methods to measure their spread.  
Likes and Dislikes of Russia Today Audience on You Tube

Scholars know very little about RT’s viewership in the U.S. and other countries. This presentation examines the viewership of Russia Today and the effectiveness of its media strategies, in particular, whether RT is successful in its choice and delivery of various topics to its audience on YouTube. 
When State Sponsored Media Goes Viral: Russia’s Use of RT to Shape Global Discourse on Syria
Megan MacDuffee Metzger, Stanford University

This project evaluates when, how, and to what degree RT is shaping global political narratives online, focusing on news about the Syrian conflict in the period around the Russian intervention.
