COLONEL NORMAN A. MCDANIEL U.S. Air Force
|
Norman McDaniel was born July 27th 1937 in Fayetteville, NC. He was Valedictorian of his high school class and graduated cum laude from North Carolina A & T where he was the Cadet Commander and “Distinguished Military Graduate” of his Airforce ROTC unit. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in June of 1959. Upon completion of training, he was assigned as an Electronic Warfare Officer on B-52’s at Travis Airforce Base, California in 1961. He served as Penetration Aids Subsystem Manager for the F-111 at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio.
In 1966, he was assigned to Takhli Air Base Thailand. On July 20, 1966, in a Douglas EB-66 Skywarrior, an electronic countermeasures radar jamming aircraft from the 41st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron with Captain McDaniel and 5 other Airforce officers, was shot down. While parachuting to the ground, he was shot at by the North Vietnamese. Upon landing, he was immediately captured. His North Vietnamese captors used hard interrogation techniques. He was beat, slapped, kicked, then thrown back onto the concrete slab in the dark cell not knowing if it was day or night sleeping for 20 minutes.
Colonel McDaniel’s decorations include: The Silver Star, Defense Superior Service Medal, The Legion of Merit with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, The Distinguished Flying Cross 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star with Valor Device (Combat “V”), The Purple Heart, Prisoner of War Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal with 14 Bronze Stars and The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with bronze palm.
He is the author of the book “Yet Another Voice”.
