You know it’s finally fall in the Sebastian River Area when the great mullet migration arrives. Mullet make the perfect bait fish and migrate in such large schools this time of year that it is almost impossible to throw a cast net and not catch any. You can spot them along the Indian River Lagoon and ocean shorelines. They’re easy to spot because the water around them will be moving and splashing as they jump and run away from predators, predators like tarpon, snook, shark, red drum, jack crevalle, and anxious anglers. Anglers hoping for that trophy tarpon or slot-size snook will seek out these large bait pods. A salt-water fishing license is required, and if you want to keep that snook, you must also have a special stamp or hire a professional Fishing Charter who takes care of all that. Protecting our natural resources is important to maintaining our way of life here as we have many endangered and protected species that make this such an attractive area. Click here to purchase a license and learn more https://myfwc.com/license/recreational/saltwater-fishing/.

If you’re not angling for a catch, it’s also an exciting time to be on or near the water to view some fantastic acrobatics. Dolphin love to eat and play with mullet and may even put on a show for you if you’re lucky enough. Keep a close watch out and you’ll see fish of all sizes leaping right out of the water! Birds like osprey and pelicans are also attracted to this activity so have your camera ready for some great photo ops. Along Sebastian’s "Working Waterfront" There are many Water Rentals where you can take a pontoon boat, jet ski, kayak or SUP and head out into the Indian River Lagoon and Sebastian Inlet areas.

Stop in the Pelican Porch Visitor’s Center when you first arrive to learn about our protected species and about how you can “Vacation Like a Local” and help us keep this a beautiful place to enjoy for years to come! Click here to learn more about the Visitor's Center.
