2020 CCIRA Conference
The CCIRA 2020 Conference registration is just one month away from opening!
The CCIRA Conference has always been a highlight of my year and has supported continual growth as an educator. It has also been touted by many national speakers as one of the best literacy conferences in the country. What a great opportunity to learn from local and national experts about how to refine our craft in our home state.
To make the conference even more accessible for everyone to attend we are offering one day, Friday/Saturday, and full conference registration options for 2020.
Wondering how to fund your conference registration?
There are many teachers who use different resources to attend the conference such as asking their PTO to sponsor their conference registration or going to their local Rotary club for sponsorship.
CCIRA offers a number of scholarships each year as well.
to apply (or visit the scholarship page under the conference tab on our website). To be eligible for the CCIRA scholarship, applicants must be current CCIRA members.
Applications are due by October 15
.
What innovative ideas do you have to obtain funding to attend the 2020 conference?

(Colorado Springs)
Please join us for PPIRA's annual mini-conference!
About this Event
We invite you to join us for PPIRA’s 2019 Literacy Conference, “Growing Writers: Supporting the Needs of Writers in the Classroom.” The conference is located at the beautifully historic Julie Penrose Estate on October 19th from 8:00 A.M – 3:30 P.M. A light breakfast will be served, and lunch is included in the cost of the conference.
Like a gardener tends to flowers in a garden, educators support writers who have unique and specialized needs who are growing differently. Conference participants will have the opportunity to choose from sessions focused on supporting the unique needs of writers at a variety of developmental levels using classroom-tested strategies. Breakout sessions will be presented by local educators with extensive experience in these areas from across the Pikes Peak Region and Denver area.
Intended Audience: K-12 educators and administrators
Objectives:
- Describe, compare, and contrast strategies to meet the needs of unique learners presented in each session and evaluate their application in the classroom
- Analyze interrelationships between the needs of unique populations of students and research-based strategies to address them
- Develop plans for the implementation of learned strategies in the classroom and opportunities to share with colleagues
Licensure recertification (7.5 hours) or Adams State College credit (0.5)
are available for attending the complete PPIRA Fall Literacy Conference. Forms and certificates of participation will be distributed at the end of the conference.

October Teaching Tip
from TPS

Levels of Listening
Have you ever said, “Listen carefully,” to your students? Typically, the response from students is to put down their device, stare at the person speaking, and nod occasionally, right? Is this what we mean, or is it necessary to teach listening skills?
The Levels of Listening is a protocol that can be used with any type of primary source with audio, for example, speeches, music with and without lyrics, or testimony. Anything that contains audio can utilize this protocol to help others
listen carefully.
Imagine using this protocol as a launching point for discussion after a school assembly, presidential address, or a more recent popular song that your students listen to.
One of the ways this has been used is to find a primary source audio clip, for example,
Roosevelt and Hitler
by Buster Ezell. (
for the contextual info.) Break students into groups of 2-4. Ask each group to focus on a different level, answering the questions and noticing anything else that fits within the level. Repeat the audio clip over and over until they have gone through each level, perhaps giving them the
lyrics
or transcript on the last listen. Students will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the audio clip by focusing on the levels individually.
