Jeff Heyman

Montevideo: Skateboarding History in the San Ramon Valley Photographs by Jeff Heyman

A new exhibit of photographs by Chamber member Jeff Heyman, an Orinda-based photographer, is coming up in February at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley in Danville.

It was the Summer of ‘76… “Montevideo: Skateboarding History in the San Ramon Valley,” an exhibit of rare skateboarding photographs from 1976. On display February 5 through June 8, 2025, at Museum of the San Ramon Valley, 205 Railroad Avenue, Danville, Calif. Tel. (925) 837-3750

These vivid black and white photographs are a time capsule of local history and a nostalgic look back at a bygone era in Contra Costa County. Jeff Heyman was a student at San Ramon Valley High School in Danville (Class of ‘77) and a photographer for the school’s newspaper, The Wolf Print. He documented the skateboarding scene at Montevideo, a drainage ditch in San Ramon popular with skateboarders from across Northern California. His photographs bring us a glimpse of this short-lived and largely forgotten time.

Heyman, an award-winning fine art photographer and photojournalist, has had work exhibited at the Lafayette Library, the Orinda Library, the Frank Bette Center for the Arts in Alameda, and the de Young Museum in San Francisco.

WomenSing Celebrates International Women's Day in Music

Songweavers – Women’s Bond and Resilience in the Voice of Celtic Traditions

In celebration of International Women’s Day, WomenSing is proud to present Songweavers: Women’s Bond and Resilience in the Voice of Celtic Traditions, an uplifting performance that honors the strength, contributions, and enduring spirit of women through the rich heritage of Celtic music and storytelling.

The unique performance will feature an exceptional ensemble of guest artists. The Peninsula Scottish Fiddlers, led by Artistic Director and pianist Shauna Pickett-Gordon, will bring the energetic and dynamic traditions of Scottish music to life, with her creative direction and innovative arrangements. Joining them is renowned percussionist Peter Maund, known for his virtuosity in world music traditions. He will infuse the performance through the Bodhrán, a traditional Irish frame drum. Captivating storyteller Dana Sherry will enrich the experience with Irish and Scottish tales, guiding the listeners through a vivid journey that spans history and legend. Details: The Lesher Center for the Arts, May 9, 2025 at 7:30 PM, May 10, 2025 at 2:30PM

Contra Costa Ballet presents a tribute to its directors, Richard Cammack and Zola Dishong, celebrating 38 years of excellence and quality ballet training. The program will start with the ballet classic, "Les Sylphides," choreographed in 1907 (as Chopiniana) by Mikhail Fokine to the music of Frédéric Chopin. Contra Costa Ballet performed this piece many times in its early years and now brings it back for the first time in a decade. "Les Sylphides" is described as a romantic ballet with no plot but alludes to a "melancholic poet" in search of the ideal.

Also on the program are "Mes Enfants," choreographed by Charles Anderson, "Reverie," choreographed by Richard Cammack, and "Glazunov Suite," a grand and elegant finisher choreographed by Richard Cammack and Zola Dishong together.

Front Porch Music logo

Front Porch Music Awarded California Arts Council Statewide and Regional Networks Grant

The California Arts Council has announced a grant award of $6,481 to Front Porch Music as part of its Statewide and Regional Networks program during its 2024-25 fiscal year grant cycle. Support awarded will continue to benefit communities throughout the state until the end of the project cycle timeline in September 2025.

With support from the California Arts Council, Front Porch Music will build on its successful track record of networking acoustic musicians across Contra Costa, Alameda, Solano, Marin, and San Francisco counties. Since 2019, our core programs—including monthly open mic nights and affordable public performances—have been serving senior musicians, emerging artists, and acoustic music lovers throughout the region. Our network has grown from 20 to 250 members. This grant will enable us to add and maintain robust web features for musician profiles, collaboration and performance opportunities, and gig listings. Additionally, it will support nonprofit partnerships for a volunteer corps of Front Porch musicians to bring the joy of acoustic music to charitable events for marginalized communities. This grant will help ensure musicians are well-connected, fostering inclusivity, meaningful performances, and intergenerational connections for the community at large.

Andrée Hurst, executive director of Front Porch Music, says, “We are thrilled to be selected as one of CAC’s grantees this year. It will greatly help us carry out our mission of networking musicians with one another and connecting volunteer musicians with charitable organizations and activities to serve the community.

Front Porch Music was featured as part of a larger announcement from the California Arts Council of more than 800 grant awards totaling close to $19.5 million in overall projected investments for operational and project support to nonprofit organizations and units of government throughout the state of California.

The California Arts Council is a state agency with a mission of strengthening arts, culture, and creative expression as the tools to cultivate a better California for all. The Arts Council is California’s leading public arts grants provider with funding accessible to every county in California.

“Art makes us who we are in California,” said California Arts Council Executive Director Danielle Brazell. “We are defined by our creative workforce, and our everyday lives are informed, enriched, and uplifted by the artists and cultural workers across our state. On behalf of the CAC, I offer my sincere congratulations – and my gratitude – to each of our award recipients for this grant cycle.”

“We pledged fealty to our comprehensive and field-informed Strategic Framework in our decision making for funding for this fiscal year,” said Council Chair Roxanne Messina Captor. “Council made every effort to make each dollar in our budget go its furthest toward our most important aspirations for our agency, our governor, and our Legislature alike: to create a California for all, where the arts are accessible to all.”

Organizations were awarded grants across nine different program areas designed to benefit the whole of California’s arts and culture ecosystem, including a second year of funding for two-year programs awarded in the previous fiscal year. Award funds prioritize many of the aspirations articulated in the agency’s Strategic Framework, specifically increasing opportunities for general operating and multiyear grants, geographic equity, individual artists, small organizations, and state-local partner funding and capacity building.
