As Earth day approaches, it is important to remember how our individual actions can contribute to a greener, more resilient earth. One of the biggest ways we can do our part is through waste management techniques. Florida fell short of its 2020 goal of recycling 75% of waste; therefore it is more crucial than ever before to keep working on improving how we recycle.

Recycling only works when the right materials enter the recycling stream. Contaminants like plastic bags, yogurt cups and pizza boxes can ruin recycled products and cause equipment to break down, leading to wasted energy and costs. Curb-side recycling should be limited to the 'simple five', paper products, cardboard, cans, cartons and bottles.

Due to Covid-19 we have also seen a rise in materials such as PPE and sanitation supplies that we may not have needed to dispose before. Sanitation wipes and PPE are not recyclable and should be put in a sealed bag in your trash bin to avoid posing risk to waste management staff. You can also cut the elastic ear bands on masks to limit the hazards to animals as well.

Food by products, like Fruits, veggies, coffee grounds and egg shells can also be composted! Composting at home Is a great way to reduce waste and regenerate soil quality. If at home options don’t strike your fancy check out this article for Miami composting initiatives!
