DCE/Youth Leaders Retreat Recap

On November 1-3, DCEs and Youth Leaders from the CNH District spent some time on retreat in South Lake Tahoe. In addition to Bible study and discussions around “Dealing with Stress”, there was time to just unwind, relax, and connect with other colleagues from across the District!

Special thanks goes out to Jen de la Motte and Julia Tougas for their organization and the leadership that made this a great experience for all! Much thanks to the CNH District for providing a Wellness Grant for this event and to LCEF for their financial support as well!

Disability Awareness Workshop at Zion North Highlands Recap

One of the highlights of the Come Build a Church Disability Awareness Workshop was our panel of caregivers and people with disabilities. Stories were shared about losing hearing, sight, and mobility. A suggestion was made to “Ask the person first if help is needed. Then listen carefully to the answer before just jumping in.”

A young man shared that playing power soccer helped him become more independent. One caregiver gave suggestions that helped her when caring for her late husband with Alzheimer’s. She said it was helpful to suggest a menu item rather than leaving it up to him, which could cause confusion. Structure was also important. Another caregiver shared stories about his late wife with Multiple Sclerosis that brought them closer together and which they could laugh about. A mother shared the joys of raising a son with Down syndrome, and a father wore several swimming medals that his daughter had won in Special Olympics competitions around the world. We learned from their personal stories of strength and faith and were blessed by each of them.

LCEF and CUWAA Offering Certificate in Management Scholarship

LCEF, in partnership with Concordia University, Wisconsin/Ann Arbor (CUWAA), is launching a new cohort with 10 scholarship seats available. This cohort, which will include individuals working in the faith-based not-for-profit space (not only LCMS rostered workers), will be offered via the online self-paced program. Unlike the current cohort of 25 rostered workers, doing live courses, this opportunity will offer additional flexibility.

Like the current cohort, LCEF is providing a significant scholarship opportunity getting them through the Certificate in Management. The attached flier includes a live link with all the necessary information, including the scholarship application. Again, we are only providing 10 scholarships for this cohort which begins in January 2024. Application deadline is November 15.
