Walk for Courage Steps Up as Ride Don't Hide Takes a Break in 2024

As we transition from the exhilarating pedal pushing "Ride Don't Hide" to the reflective paths of the Walk for Courage, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the cyclists, volunteers, and supporters who have been part of the Ride Don't Hide journey over the years.

Your enthusiasm, commitment, and unwavering support has significantly bolstered our community's efforts in promoting mental health awareness and support. We are immensely grateful for your contributions and hope to see you lace up your walking shoes to join us as we keep making strides for mental health.

The 3rd Annual Walk for Courage, set for Saturday, July 20th, 2024. This key event, is taking place at Owen Sound Fitness and Training, promises to be a morning of reflection, remembrance, and resilience.

Each step taken in the Walk for Courage serves multiple purposes: remembering those lost, celebrating survivors, and cultivating a supportive community committed to preventing future tragedies. It's a day that combines the grief of past losses with the hope for a future where mental health is openly supported and discussed.

Participants walk from Owen Sound Fitness & Training to the Bayshore Community Centre and back, tracing a route that symbolizes the journey many face in battling mental health challenges.

The Walk for Courage was established in 2022 following a tragic loss that moved the local community deeply. Jeffrey Courage, whose battle with mental health ended in suicide, inspired his family and CMHA Grey Bruce to create a platform for change.

Funds raised from the walk are channeled into several critical areas. Some of these areas include the Friends and Neighbours (FAN) Club for children, the Let's Talk program targeting teenagers, and the Talk Today initiative—a collaboration with the local hockey team, Owen Sound Attack, which focuses on athletes' mental health. The event also backs training for community members in Mental Health First Aid, SafeTALK (Suicide Alertness for Everyone), and ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training).

As "Ride Don't Hide" participants and supporters look for ways to continue their involvement in mental health advocacy, the Walk for Courage offers a meaningful opportunity to engage and contribute.

It's more than just a walk—it's a communal vow to never let anyone walk alone in their darkest times.

Though the ride may be resting, the journey continues on foot, with every step marking progress in the ongoing battle against mental health stigma and towards healing and hope.
