FDA’s Boyd-Seale to Present at Research Professional Townhall on January 19
|
|
This month’s Research Professional Townhall features Dr. Debra Boyd-Seale, who will present on the topic “Electronic Informed Consent and Consenting Non-English Speaking Participants.”
Boyd-Seale is a consumer safety officer with the Office of Bioresearch Monitoring Operations West in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Regulatory Affairs. Recently, Boyd-Seale and her research colleagues conducted inspections of Remdesivir clinical trials. Their work included visiting hospitals, reviewing clinical data and research participants’ medical records, interviewing physicians caring for COVID-19 patients, and visiting pharmacies where the drug was stored. They reviewed data to ensure the safety of the research participants and to help the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research determine the safety and efficacy of the drug. As a result of their collective work, Remdesivir was approved to treat COVID-19.

Research Professionals: Join the Upcoming REAL Training Session on January 20
Registration is open for the REAL Training session, “Waivers of Informed Consent Guideline: Applying and Requesting Unanticipated & Anticipated Waivers.” Attendees will learn how to recognize the different types of waivers and alternation of informed consent and describe the regulatory requirements and justification needed for each type of waiver. They will also learn to identify when anticipated and unanticipated waivers can be applied to a study and understand the steps required for requesting each type.
The online REAL Training session will be held 1:00-2:00 p.m. CST on January 20. Check your Outlook account for the Microsoft Teams invitation. You can also register for the event in WeLearn.

Roadshow Details "At Hand" Transformation
Join the next Roadshow on January 25

All Lurie Children's Hospital employees are invited to attend the At Hand Transformation Roadshow to hear Executive Sponsors and Project Team Leaders provide a brief introduction to At Hand, discuss how Human Capital Management, Finance, and Supply Chain are being transformed, and preview the system. The At Hand Transformation Team will also host a Q&A discussion at the end of the session to collect questions and inform future engagement activities.
Plan to join the Roadshow on January 25 from noon to 1:00 p.m. CST. Visit the At Hand AllConnect site for information on how to link to the session virtually, as well as a list of upcoming Roadshow dates, locations, and types (virtual versus in-person). Note that some Roadshows will be repeated and cover similar content while others will be tailored and focus on specific changes in high-impact areas.

National Science Foundation Debuts Webinar Series on January 31
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is launching its 2022 NSF Policy Office Webinar Series focusing on specific topics of interest to the research community. The first webinar in the series—scheduled for January 31—will detail NSF’s Current and Pending Support Policy and frequently asked questions.
Attendees are encouraged to submit questions in advance so that speakers and panelists may tailor their remarks to answer the most pressing questions. Please submit your questions to grants_conference@nsf.gov or when you register here. There is no cost to participate. Recordings from previous webinars and conferences are available on the NSF’s Resource Center page or YouTube channel.

Registration is Open for the Implementation Science Reading Course; RSVP by February 1
The deadline to register for the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS) Dissemination & Implementation (D&I) Science Program’s 4th Annual Implementation Science Reading Course is February 1. The course content and discussions are geared toward researchers and practitioners new to the field of implementation science and research teams applying for NUCATS D&I pilot funds or other D&I-sponsored funding. Students, trainees, and faculty from Northwestern University and NUCATS affiliates are invited to participate.
The online course will run February 17–June 9, with meetings held 9:00–10:00 a.m. CST every two weeks (on Tuesdays).

Register for the Next "Responsible Conduct of Research" Course
Registration is now open for the next Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) course offering. Classes will be held online via Zoom on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. CST, through March 31 (12 classes total). A. Postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty who have received NIH training or career development awards are required to complete the RCR series, which provides an overview of the principles and expectations of conducting research ethically and responsibly. New Seminar Series Guides "K Award" Recipients
" Succeeding with Your K Award" professional development seminar series allows early career faculty members and post-doctoral fellows to look at their own work and that of others in a critical but supportive manner. The free interactive and supportive peer-mentoring sessions offered through NUCATS cover a variety of topics, including elevator pitches, the K-to-R transition, and diversifying your funding portfolio.
The sessions are held the third Monday of each month (except January). The next session (held via Zoom) is February 21 from noon to 1:30 p.m. CST. NUCATS sends invitations to early career faculty members or post-doctoral fellows supported on a National Institutes of Health K Award. If you have not received an invitation and feel you should be included, please email Christine Charles, Program Coordinator, NUCATS.

The Office of Research Development, in collaboration with Dr. Paul Schumacker, is seeking additional presenters for the "Research in Progress" series. This is an excellent opportunity to share your work with our research enterprise and continue fostering a sense of community and collaboration with one another. Please note, at this time all presentations will be online utilizing the Microsoft Teams platform.

Alliance for Research in Chicagoland Communities Releases Seed Grants RFA - Deadlines January 21 and February 4
|
|
The NUCATS Institute, in partnership with Northwestern Memorial Hospital, will fund seed grants that support the development of partnerships and projects that engage and center the leadership of communities most impacted by health inequities in research collaboration with Northwestern research teams. New Community Research Capacity-Building Seed Grants will provide $2,500 over six months. Partnership Development Seed Grants will provide $5,000 over 12 months and include an option to apply for a $2,500 Anti-Racism in Research Supplement.
Cycle 1
The second cycle of 2022 ARCC Seed Grants will be released soon to support additional Community Research Capacity and Partnership Development grants, as well as Research Pilot grants. Applications for the second cycle will be due in Spring 2022 and funded in Summer 2022.

Applications to the New Digital Health Investigator Award Due January 31
|
|
The deadline to submit applications to the inaugural Lurie Children’s Digital Health Investigator Award, which recognizes academic pursuits related to digital health tools, is January 31.
Awards will support digital health projects, such as telehealth, e-visits, remote patient monitoring, decision trees, MyChart functionalities, and open scheduling, that are achievable within 6 months. Resource needs will be scoped/determined based on your pitch, and awards will take the form of people and intellectual resources. Deliverables include conference abstract, pilot data for a QI project, or grant manuscript submission.
Click here to begin the application process. Complete the form indicating your interest and then receive a slide template via email to pitch your idea. Once you submit your slide deck (4 slides maximum) you’ll receive an invitation to participate in a 15-minute pitch session scheduled in February to pitch your idea to Digital Health Leaders and Smith Child Health Catalyst research experts. Submissions received before the January 31 deadline will have the opportunity to receive feedback in advance of the pitch session, though early submissions are not required. You may also attend optional drop-in sessions held on Fridays in January to refine your idea with a member of the Digital Health Investigator Award team. A link to office hours will be included in the email with the slide template.
Awardees will be selected based on their presentation at a pitch session in February, and the winners will be notified in March. For additional information on the Digital Health Academic Resources to aid in your project, please review the tools listed below.
