Take the Plunge and help raise money for the O'Conner Pool this summer!

Grab your swimsuit and get ‘freezin for a reason’. The second annual "Philly Phreeze" is a winter pool “plunge raiser” to support Philadelphia’s community pools (like O'Connor Pool). Parks & Rec needs 400 lifeguards this summer to open all available pools, as, again, they are seriously underfunded.

Philly needs kids that are safe, healthy, and properly supervised, so here’s the ask: The Philly Phreeze will take place at Kelly Pool in Fairmount Park on Saturday, February 24th from noon-2pm. Last year's inaugural event raised $70,000 to support lifeguards, and this year's event is going to be even bigger and better, with your support. A local team has been organized by Building Friends in Fitler (BFF), a collaboration between CCRA, FSNA, Friends of Schuylkill River Park, Friends of Fitler Square Park, Trinity at 22nd St., and other local groups.

Volunteer to Jump In ($50) or stay dry and support our team of jumpers (donation of your choice). Your donation will be restricted to hiring Philly lifeguards and funding pool programs.

Individuals who donate at least $50 can join their neighbors and “take the plunge” for Philly pools. Or, stay home and support your neighbors (and Philly kids) by donating to the team. To join in the frigid festivities, or just as importantly, donate while staying warm, dive in here. Questions? Ask Travis at centercity@centercityresidents.org.

Author Talk: John Andrew Gallery| Revitalizing Market East: A History, 1957 to 2022

Mon, February 12, 2024 5:30 p.m.

Philadelphia City Institute

Cost: FREE

In the 1950s, Market Street East was a bustling retail area. There were five department stores, several movie theaters, men’s and women’s clothing and shoe stores, several bookstores, restaurants, and drug stores. The sidewalks were full of shoppers. However, retail business owners felt parking was inadequate, and so in the late 1950s, the City Planning Commission began envisioning ways to provide parking and associated activities. Designs were proposed by Wilhelm von Moltke, Lou Kahn, Romaldo Giurgola, Skidmore Owings, and Merrill, leading decades later to The Gallery at Market East, designed by John Bower and Gerald Cope.

John Andrew Gallery was part of all that; he designed the 1964 plan and, in the late 1970s, chaired the Market East Development Corporation responsible for Phase Two of The Gallery. His illustrated talk will show the evolution of architectural design and include little-known behind-the-scenes stories about such characters as Ed Bacon and Frank Rizzo.

This program is sponsored by Friends in the City (FitC) and the Philadelphia City Institute Library.

Philly’s Chinatown community gathers in the streets for two Lunar New Year parades led by The Philadelphia Suns. A late-night Lunar New Year’s Eve celebration kicks off at 10 p.m. from 10th and Spring Streets on Friday, February 9, 2024. And on Sunday, February 11, 2024, a daytime parade follows the same route at 11 a.m. The parades consist of music, lion dancing, drumming and firecrackers — meant to bring good luck to the local community.

Valentine's Day Concert

February 14th, 7:30pm

The Philadelphia Orchestra

1 South Broad St.

Romance takes you in its arms in this evening of music inspired by lovers’ dances! It begins with a whirling danzón from Mexico and two daring, dangerous tangos from Argentina. At its heart is a Spanish masterwork for guitar and orchestra, alternating rhythms of flamenco with soaring, achingly beautiful orchestral passages—showcasing an internationally renowned guitarist hailed for his “virtuosic playing characterized by its vividly shaded colors and irresistible exuberance” (The New York Times). And to close this night of musical passion? The mesmerizing, irresistible tension and release of Ravel’s Bolero. Tonight, the language of love is Latin!

CCRA’s Merchant Partner program is a true Win-Win: It provides local businesses with complimentary advertising and exposure while giving CCRA members generous deals and discounts. This week we feature men’s fashion oasis Blue Sole Shoes.

Get Your Happy Feet to Blue Sole Shoes

If you’re a man (or if there’s a man in your life), there’s really only one place to go when it comes to shoes, and that would be Blue Sole Shoes at 18th & Chestnut.

But be not misled: this isn’t merely a shoe store; au contraire is a premier men’s boutique that harkens back to 2007. And so we’re talking not only fashion-forward shoes here but also stylin’ belts, socks, bags, accessories, and yes, gift cards, all delivered with top-notch customer service.

It’s a tough call as to which is more attractive: their website or the store itself, so why not browse both?

Oh, and this: CCRA members receive 10% off regularly-priced merchandise.

Merchant Partners "Deals and Discounts" Program

Please support our local merchants and save money too. These local merchants will provide a deal or discount to any member who shows a current CCRA membership card and personal identification.
