CCRA creates new Spruce/Pine Task Force | |
In 2009, as part of an effort to mitigate the opposition to creating bike lanes on Spruce and Pine Streets, the city agreed to permit temporary parking, of up to 20 minutes, in those bike lanes. CCRA supported the creation of those lanes, and has been an advocate for many other bike lanes in and around our neighborhood.
On Oct. 17, over the objections of numerous residents of CCRA, Society Hill, and Wash West, City Council unanimously passed a bill that would prohibit any and all parking in bike lines across the city.
CCRA believes that Spruce and Pine Street can be made safer for all users (cyclists, pedestrians, and motor vehicles), while at the same time acknowledging the 2009 agreement permitting temporary parking. And there is ample precedent for carve-outs to what otherwise would be citywide laws. With the foregoing in mind, CCRA has created the Spruce/Pine Task Force, which has been charged with coming up with alternatives to a Spruce/Pine plan proposed by OTIS (click here for details).
OTIS' plan is premised on no parking in the bike lanes, and includes concrete barriers to prevent motorized vehicles from entering the bike lanes, as well as the creation of additional loading zones. Among the alternatives the task force will be considering are: speed bumps; reducing temporary parking to 10 minutes; limiting temporary parking to those with parking permits; and a raised concrete planter at the beginning of each bike lane block. The Task Force welcomes any and all comments from CCRA members. Please email Travis with Spruce/Pine Task Force in the subject line.
