April 3 Inaugural Pediatric Science Seminar: Soft, Skin-Interfaced Wireless Electronic and Microfluidic Sensors in Healthcare

Presenter: Jon Rogers, MD

Louis Simpson and Kimberly Querrey Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Neurological Surgery (and by courtesy Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, and Dermatology)

Seminar Title: Soft, Skin-Interfaced Wireless Electronic and Microfluidic Sensors in Healthcare

Seminar Description: The skin is mechanically soft and curved; modern electronic and microfluidic technologies are rigid and planar. Eliminating this profound mismatch in physical properties creates vast opportunities in man-made systems that can naturally integrate with the epidermis for diagnostic, therapeutic, or sensory function with important, unique capabilities relevant to clinical healthcare. Over the last decade, a convergence of new concepts in materials science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and advanced manufacturing has led to the emergence of diverse, novel classes of 'biocompatible' electronic and microfluidic systems with skin-like physical properties. This talk describes the key ideas and presents some of the most recent device examples, including (1) wireless, battery-free electronic 'tattoos', with applications in continuous monitoring of vital signs in maternal and pediatric populations, including active deployments in the most advanced hospitals in the United States and clinics in multiple countries in Africa, and (2) microfluidic platforms that can capture, manipulate, and perform biomarker analysis on microliter volumes of sweat, with applications in cystic fibrosis and nutritional monitoring.

Limited Submission Funding Opportunity: Dr. Ralph and Marian Falk Medical Research Trust Catalyst Award Program

Deadline for internal proposals is March 20

The Office of Sponsored Programs is accepting internal proposals for the Dr. Ralph and Marian Falk Medical Research Trust Catalyst Award Program.

The Catalyst Research Award Program provides an opportunity to conduct preliminary work on high-risk, high-reward research addressing a wide variety of clinical disease areas. The target of the Falk Catalyst’s funding is projects at the intersection of technology and clinical science, intended to move from basic science insights toward solutions, techniques, and tools that can be transferred to clinical practice in the near term. Catalyst research projects must describe specific milestones and benchmarks that, if successfully met, would enable recipients to apply for additional funding through the two-year Transformational Award Program.

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is invited to submit up to two applications. The deadline to submit internal proposals is March 20 (by 5:00 p.m. CT). Please click the link below for specific instructions about the internal proposal submission process and additional details about the Falk Medical Research Trust Catalyst Award Program.

For more information, contact Robin S. Lewis, Director of Office of Sponsored Programs, 312-503-7063.

Spring Research Services Voucher Program Application Deadline is April 3

Manne Research Institute fosters the growth and expansion of research activities at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago by helping researchers access the resources needed to conduct world-class, cutting-edge research. To support this goal, Manne Research Institute partners with several internal and external research service providers to offer cost-effective research services to all investigators, particularly junior investigators who may not have well-established funding sources. The research institute will offer faculty along with associated trainees the opportunity to apply for vouchers for certain research services twice a year (fall and spring). The spring deadline to submit applications for voucher requests is April 3.

This spring cycle, anyone applying for statistical support, Catalyst, histology/microscopy (equipment usage), or writing services will need to have a pre-consultation completed with that resource pool or department no later than March 17.

Applications for Knee Injury Prevention Program Summer Internship Accepted Through March 20

The 2023 application cycle for the Knee Injury Prevention Program (KIPP) Summer Internship is open. The deadline to apply is March 20.

The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine is seeking undergraduate students who are interested in learning more about injury prevention. The Knee Injury Prevention Program (KIPP) Summer Internship is designed to provide students with an educational experience that will allow them to gain practical insight through teaching and leading KIPP sessions, attendance at weekly research meetings, and participation in research seminars and trainings.

This educational experience will run June–August for a minimum of eight weeks during the Summer of 2023. The internship will be approximately 15–20 hours a week. Interns will consult with the research staff to set their program schedules in advance.

Summer Scholars spend eight or more weeks working daily with their faculty mentor and research team during the summer. In addition, the Summer Scholars participate in a weekly course to socialize while learning about scientific presentations and careers in science from participating faculty members.

Research Professional Community Day, Panel Day, and Journal Club Volunteer Opportunities

The Research Professional (RP) Engagement and Mentoring Committee invites you to volunteer to help plan several events scheduled for this summer. The events are great opportunities to network and enhance your CV for potential advancement.

RP Community Day (formerly RP Education Day) is scheduled for July 27

This event will celebrate everyone involved in research at Lurie Children’s. In the past, the event included a poster presentation, a variety of speakers, and networking opportunities. Volunteers will meet to share ideas and organize this year’s event. Contact Daniella Espinoza, Sarayu Ratnam, or Juan Vintimilla if you are interested in being part of the planning committee.

The Research Professional/Principal Investigator Panel is scheduled for June 13 or 15

This will be the first panel of this type and we are looking forward to learning from a few dynamic PI/RP pairs at the event. If you would like to help plan this event, or if you know of any "dream team" PI/RP pairs in any pillar who you think would be interested in serving on the panel, contact Anna Desonia or Carolyn Prokop.

RP Engagement and Mentoring Committee Journal Club Announces Call for Presenters

Presenting at a journal club is open to all research professionals, and these sessions are hosted throughout the year. This is a one hour space for casual, engaging discussion about articles of interest to you, or research you would like to present. The journal club facilitators will work with you to schedule the meeting time, create the presentation, and help generate discussion questions and topics. This is ideal practice for public speaking and a great way to become engaged in the RP community. Contact [email protected] with questions or if you are interested in signing up to present.

Manne Research Institute is pleased to assist our community with sharing internal research career opportunities. Click here to promote an open position in the Events & Opportunities update or on Manne Research Institute's LinkedIn page. Please note, positions must be actively posted to the Lurie Children's careers site to be featured.
