2023 Legislative Session: Prepare to Advocate for Alaska’s Children and Families with Jordan Marshall

The legislative session begins Jan. 17. It’s the first year of a two-year legislature. What do you need to know to prepare for a successful session? Which issues are most likely to dominate discussions in Juneau? Let’s take a look at how legislators have organized, the proposed FY24 budget, and discuss how to ensure your priorities don’t slip through the cracks. ACT hosts Jordan Marshall, legislative consultant, to provide ACT and its partners a pre-session situation analysis, a refresher about current topics that impact the well-being of Alaska's children and families, and a review of some advocacy tips and best practices.

Advocacy and Lobbying 101: Legal Tips for 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Advocates

501(c)(3)s play an important role in educating the public and elected officials about policy issues. With the 2023 legislative session right around the corner, join experts from Bolder Advocacy to gain a clearer understanding (or refresher) of how to maximize your advocacy, the kinds of advocacy activities 501(c)(3)s can engage in, and when a communication is considered lobbying.

Participants will learn:

- How federal tax law permits lobbying for charities and how lobbying is defined;

- 1 easy step most charities can take to maximize what they can spend on lobbying;

- Yearly lobbying limits for charities;

- Tips for taking advantage of the narrow definitions of lobbying – to make the most of their lobbying limit;

- The application of these rules to ballot measure activities; and

- Some key reminders about lobby law in the State of Alaska.
