A LETTER FROM JOHN DAVID (JD) AND FR. BOB

Dear Friends and Family  of  Camp Sancta Maria:

We count ourselves blessed at CSM when we receive letters from our alum, sharing how they made lifelong friends at Camp or how the Lord has touched their lives. One thing rings constant: spending time at Camp makes you grow; being at  CSM changes lives! We'd like to share (with permission) a letter we received from John Clark, a former camper who is now a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston:

"When thinking back on what led me to seminary, there are many places and people that come to mind. Yet after my family, the most formative experience in my life is clear as day: Camp Sancta Maria. On top of school, scouts, and sports, CSM is the place where I learned the most. A simple place with simple goals; my summers in Gaylord taught me the basics of being a man and the beauty of the sacramental life.

I started going to Camp when I was 7, and I didn't stop until I was 16. Even moving to Texas wouldn't stop me from heading back. That might sound crazy, but it's simple: Up north there's a life of prayer, of brotherhood, of lacrosse and horses and euchre that are a gift to any young man's life. It's two weeks of prayer and fun and a simple teaching: Try hard, be Kind, be Obedient (TKO). This is the core of the Christian life. It is still the core of mine. The words have matured a bit: we talk about virtue and pastoral charity and work ethic, but it's all the same stuff. The camp model simply teaches boys to be men.

Essential to that is the sacramental life of CSM. I was nine years old when I first recognized the Eucharist as Christ. I remember it vividly. Someone decided it was worth the trouble to put me in an alb two-sizes too big, to let me almost drip candle wax all over the floor of that sweet little chapel, and to have me kneel on the noisiest kneeler ever created. So there I was, at the altar, kneeling as still as I could when Fr. Bob consecrated the Body of Christ. And I knew it was Him, and my life has never been the same.

This pivotal experience was built on something only CSM provides: two weeks of praying silently outside the chapel before every liturgy, an introduction to the Liturgy of the Hours every night, praying the Angelus twice a day, and that powerful little mantra: TKO. Without these, I wouldn't have been prepared to receive the Lord in that moment. You can't force these moments, the Lord does what he wills, but you sure can facilitate them.

It should come as no surprise that I first felt the call to priesthood in that same chapel. It would be hard not to feel the call in a place so centered on brotherhood and prayer. I was simply walking with Christ, Mary, and my buddies. The natural result of camp is the reception of the supernatural. This doesn't just apply to those called to priesthood, but to all of the boys at camp. God is present there, and it is easy to recognize Him. What a gift."

John describes beautifully what Camp Sancta Maria is all about!  We are excited to see so many of our campers develop or significantly deepen their relationship with God and experience his love in a profound way!  Will you help us to provide CSM campers the same opportunity John had? Imagine that your gift could help support potential future seminarians like John!

CSM's mission is more important than ever. As we continue to see the difficulties in family life and as a society, our children need a place to go where they can be refreshed in the real world of nature and build healthy relationships that will last a lifetime. Thanks to your support, CSM provides them that place!

As we approach Thanksgiving and the time for increased giving, we ask you to consider supporting Camp Sancta Maria through your prayers and through a monetary donation. Your gift will help us form boys into young Christian men (and for a couple of weeks during the summer, form girls into young Christian women). Your gift will help change lives! Because we do not receive any financial support from any of the Catholic dioceses or have our own "parishioners" to help us, we are especially grateful for your support.

Here are just some of the projects we hope to complete in 2019 with your help:
  • Replace the fencing in the riding arenas, near St. Luke's, at the Mess Hall, and near the Pole Barn.
  • Tile for St. John's flooring, as well as new shower heads and diverters.
  • Polish the concrete floors in three more camper cabins.
  • Purchase an ice machine to be used for the salad bar and for beverages.
  • With over 24 buildings at CSM, we continue to need plenty of paint and roofing materials.
  • Last but not least, our Scholarship Fund needs continued assistance. By means of this fund, we offer assistance to families who could not otherwise send their children to CSM.
Would you prayerfully consider being especially generous today in your support of CSM's campers through this year-end request? Thank you again for your support of Camp Sancta Maria! God bless you and your loved ones.

Camp Sancta Maria's Family Continues to Grow

Please join us in welcoming the newest addition to the CSM family!

Our Executive Director, John David Kuhar and his wife Carrie welcomed home their little bundle of God's love, Anne Therese, shortly after the close of our 2018 season.

Annie already looks forward to being a camper in a few years. In the meantime, she's excited to meet all our campers during the 2019 season.

God bless the Kuhar family!
THANK YOU, FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF CSM!
Your support makes it possible for our campers to be refreshed in the real world of nature and build healthy relationships. Thank you!

We Are Grateful For Your Support of CSM!

Because of your prayerful and financial support of Camp Sancta Maria, we are able to continue in the mission passed down to us since our founding in 1933 of forming young Christian lives, the lives of our children and grandchildren. We are truly grateful you have chosen to partner with us in this most important mission.

Please help us spread the word about the wonderful ways in which our Lord is changing the lives of so many children and grandchildren at CSM.

Great things happen at CSM because of YOU! Thank you.

May our Lord continue to bless you and your loved ones.

Sincerely,

John David Kuhar

CSM is held in a trust governed by an independent Board of Trustees. While the Archdiocese of Detroit had generously donated the services of one its priests for decades, they are not responsible for CSM financially. This means that we are responsible to secure our own funding to advance the mission that has been passed down to us since our founding in 1933. To continue this essential work, we need your help. Are you feeling called to donate? Thank you for your prayerful consideration! Donations
