Ever wonder what gives a nose attitude?

Sometimes, creativity takes a few wrong turns before finding its face.

Howdie!

Happy Thursday!

Transformation happens around us so often that we hardly notice its magic.

This week, I tackled a creative challenge: Could my new pattern produce a nose with attitude?

Armed with a pencil, I sketched facial features onto a stuffed three-dimensional fabric head.

Oops!

That is how I learned that the proportions of the pattern I used were off. It had too much forehead leaving too little room for a chin.

It also revealed that the eyes that I had drawn were too small, and too high on the form.

Erase. Redraw. Adjust.

Colored pencils came next. The process is slow. One must build the color with layer upon layer, because the fabric gradually absorbs the pigmen and softens the bold lines into subtle shades.

Next came the really interesting part: needle sculpting.

Sculpting an Art Doll's Face, One Stitch at a Time

After conditioning a strong, durable thread, I picked up my longest, slimmest needle.

Working from the back of the head, I guided the needle towards the outer edge of the right eye.

The sculpting process follows this formula; insert needle, dip, scoop, pull. With each tiny stitch the fiberfill hiding inside the fabric is coaxed into shape.

Slowly, the face began to emerge. The nose rises. The eyes deepen. A smile started to appear.

Did the process work? Yes!

Is the face finished? Not even close!

But the experience confirmed valuable information: when one stops doing things the usual way and tries a new approach, new opportunities appear.

Will this experiment become a doll? Who knows! For now, the elusive nose with attitude remains a work in progress.

Meanwhile, Another Kind of Wonder Awaits!

For now, my little nose with attitude experiment must wait while I prepare for the Wonder Vault reveal, when this years' worth of one-of-a-kind creations will be ready to meet their new owners.
