SAFER Banking Act:

Tell Congress: Don’t Increase Investment in the Marijuana Industry.

This week, the Senate Banking Committee will vote to advance the bill now known as the SAFER Banking Act to the full Senate. Proponents of this bill won't be able to pass it easily, but your elected Representatives need to hear that you are against this dangerous legislation!

Click here to tell Congress not to put public health and safety further at risk!

Big Pot is lobbying for the inclusion of the SAFER Banking Act, a bill that would grant the industry access to the federal banking system and institutional investors. This bill would permit banks to be out of compliance with federal law while opening the doors to Wall Street investment into the marijuana industry, accelerating the creation of the next Big Tobacco.

This bill is about maximizing profits, regardless of the effects on public health or safety.

Moment of Science

2023, September - This paper evaluates the causal effect of drug decriminalization on unintentional drug overdose deaths in a context with relatively poor access to drug treatment services. Using the synthetic control method, I find that when Oregon decriminalized small amounts of drugs in February 2021, it caused 182 additional unintentional drug overdose deaths to occur in Oregon in 2021. This represents a 23% increase over the number of unintentional drug overdose deaths predicted if Oregon had not decriminalized drugs.

2023, Sept 6 - This cross-sectional study found large increases in cannabis involvement in ED visits for traffic injury over time, which may have accelerated following nonmedical cannabis commercialization.

2023, Sept 25 New study shows: 1 in 5 online dispensaries “required no formal age verification,”>80% took “nontraceable” payment methods, “enabling youth to hide their transactions,” 95% delivered to states with different marijuana laws

2023 Setp 27 - A study found that individuals with ED visits for substance use with and without psychosis were at 163 and 9.8 times the risk of developing schizophrenia compared to the general population. Cannabis was the highest-risk substance, particularly in young men.

2023, Sept 27 - Canadian adults with cannabis use disorder appear to have an approximately 60% higher risk of experiencing incident adverse cardiovascular disease events than those without cannabis use disorder.
