Update from the Department of Systemic Equity and Inclusion

DSEI Community Cabinet

As the 2022-2023 school year begins to wind down, Dr. Morgan is already planning for the 2023-2024 school year.  In doing this, he wants to encourage interested parents/ caregivers of minority student groups to consider applying to serve on the DSEI Community Cabinet (DSEICC). The work of the DSEICC will continue to be to Learn, Share, Question, and Connect on topics and issues that impact your students' educational experience. More information will be shared in August about the application process for joining the DSEICC!  Congratulations to DSEICC member Katey Kamoku for being elected to serve on the SPASD School Board.  If you have any questions about the DSEICC, please contact Dr. Morgan or Robyn Rake.

Making History

Pang Khang Named Principal of C.H. Bird Elementary School

We are excited to announce that Ms. Pang Khang will be the next Principal of C.H. Bird Elementary School! Ms. Khang has a Bachelor of Science in Curriculum and Instruction, a Bachelor of Arts in Languages and Cultures of Asia, both from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and a Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership from Cardinal Stritch University. She currently serves as Dean of Students at Sun Prairie East High School. Prior to her current position, Ms. Khang had experiences as a Positive Behavior Interventions Supports Systems Coach and Advanced Learning Specialist, and as a first-grade teacher. Ms. Khang will become the first Hmong principal in Sun Prairie Area School District history.

Ms. Khang will begin in her new role on July 1, 2023.

Hmong Heritage Month

April was Hmong Heritage Month. Hmong people are an ethnically and culturally diverse group of people originally from southern China and Southeast Asia, specifically Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. Thousands of Hmong people courageously fought alongside Americans during the Vietnam War, and many were forced to flee their native lands and resettle in communities throughout the United States, including Wisconsin, which is now home to our country's third-largest Hmong population.

Hmong Americans have lived and worked in Wisconsin for more than four decades, and have greatly contributed to our state's rich history, culture, economy, and public service. Many Hmong people are part of our community here in Sun Prairie as our neighbors, family members, friends, co-workers, business owners, students, and veterans.

We observe, recognize, and celebrate the culture, heritage, and contributions of the Hmong people to our schools, communities, state, and country.

You can read the School Board proclamation in recognition of Hmong Heritage Month here.

Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have been part of the history of the United States for over two hundred years, contributing to the culture, education, politics, economy, arts, literacy, science, and technological developments despite institutional and systemic injustices designed to prevent and limit these achievements and contributions.

We recognize that more than 10% of our student population is made up of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. We also realize that our Asian American and Pacific Islander community members continue to be subjected to incidences of hate and discrimination in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and these experiences have serious impacts on our Asian American and Pacific Islander youth and their mental and physical health.

We observe, recognize, support, and celebrate the culture, heritage, and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our schools, communities, state, and country.

You can read the School Board proclamation in recognition of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month here.

C.H. Bird Elementary School

C.H. Bird's Fly Birds after-school program hosted a Math and Literacy Game Night. Over the last few months, students learned games that teach math and literacy skills. They were ready to teach their families at a fun night of learning and community building.

Prairie Phoenix Academy

PPA students teamed up with CEOs of Tomorrow again this year to develop and run their own business, Hugga Muigga Café. Students learned about marketing, economics, and culinary skills to earn high school credit. They visited the District Support Center and Westside Elementary, giving out coffee samples and selling tea refreshers and coffee beans to staff.

Central Heights Middle School

The Central Heights Black Student Union helped to plan events for Central Heights Family Fun Night at Sheehan Park, bringing staff, students, and families together to enjoy one of our city's great parks while building deeper connections and relationships. BSU, the Boys and Girls Club, the Central Heights School Community Organization, and Community Schools all showed up to support a great evening!

Northside Elementary School

Northside looks forward to planting the Rainbow Community Garden every spring! Each grade level has planted seeds, and more will be added in the coming weeks! This summer Northside will host Tuesday Evenings in the Garden for families, staff, and community members to gather in the garden, pick produce, weed, and water.

Creekside Elementary School

Creekside had an amazing celebration of learning and lifting up our Hmong community with a Hmong Heritage Day. So many Creekside staff members, students, family members, former students, and community members came together to plan the morning opportunities for students to engage in.

Westside Elementary School

Westside Wildcats had a lot of fun at Multilingual Family Night! Westside works diligently at actively engaging the Wildcat families and the community throughout the school year as they focus on supporting and building the connection for Westside families/caregivers with their Wildcats' academic success.
