A Word From Mark

Dear Friends,

This September, we observe Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, promoting resources, and strengthening our collective response to those experiencing crisis. At Radiant Futures, we know that the risk of suicide is deeply intertwined with the experiences of survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. The emotional toll of abuse, often carried in silence, can leave survivors feeling isolated and hopeless.

One survivor who knows this reality is Barbara. After years in an abusive relationship, she often felt overwhelmed and hopeless. Her turning point came when she reached out to the Radiant Futures Helpline and began her journey of healing through our shelter, counseling, and supportive programs. Today, Barbara continues forward with resilience and hope, a testament to the life-saving impact of compassion and community.

As a community, we share a collective responsibility to support those who may be struggling. Whether by listening without judgment, sitting beside someone as they make a call, or reminding them that they matter, we each play a vital role in suicide prevention.

Thank you for standing with Radiant Futures and survivors like Barbara. Your partnership ensures that every person has access to the care and resources they need to heal, and together, we continue to build a community where hope is stronger than fear.

In Gratitude,

Mark

Finding Strength in the Gray Areas:

Barbara’s Path to Healing

Barbara remembers a time when every crisis felt like the end. After more than eight years in a domestic violence relationship, and previous experiences of loss and abuse, she often found herself overwhelmed by emotions she didn’t know how to process. At times, her thoughts turned to ending her life, a reflection of the deep isolation and despair she carried. She describes her mindset then as “black and white” where situations were either hopeless or safe, with no room to see the gray space where resilience could grow.

The turning point came when Barbara reached out to the Radiant Futures Helpline. That simple call was her first step toward reclaiming her life. From there, she engaged with multiple programs that supported her holistic healing. She found shelter in the Emergency Shelter, guidance through Legal Advocacy, transitional housing resources, counseling services, and the SAFE Visitation program, which helped her navigate court-ordered visitations for her child’s father. Each program offered Barbara a safe space to explore her feelings, develop coping skills, and learn how to rebuild trust in herself and others.

The Role of Community in Suicide Prevention and Survivor Healing

Every September since 2008, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month reminds us of the importance of extending compassion, care, and resources to those who may be facing the thought of harming themselves by suicide. At Radiant Futures, we also know how closely suicide risk intersects with the experiences of survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. The impact of abuse can deeply impact mental health, leaving survivors feeling isolated, hopeless, and alone.

According to the American Psychological Association, survivors of intimate partner violence are twice as likely to attempt suicide compared to those who have not experienced abuse. For victims of human trafficking, the numbers are even more alarming, with nearly one in four survivors having attempted suicide, compared with only 3% of individuals with no history of domestic violence exposure (Shero Foundation, 2021). These statistics remind us that while physical wounds may fade, the emotional toll of abuse often lingers, sometimes hidden from view.
