Every Month is Pride Month with Pride Cinema!

With screenings and events featuring queer themes and queer artists year-round, including our monthly Pride Cinema series, every month is pride month at the Cinema Arts Centre.

Recently, we spoke to our volunteer programmer and coordinator for Pride Cinema Brian Atkins to ask some questions about his engagement with the Cinema and with the monthly series.

Cinema Arts Centre: How long have you been involved with the Cinema Arts Centre?

Brian Atkins: I’ve been involved with the Cinema Arts Centre as long as I can remember. While I wasn’t there 50 years ago, when the films were screened on a bedsheet, I always have had fond memories and continue to build on new ones.

CAC: What are some of your favorite memories at the Cinema?

Brian: I’ve had so many great memories at the cinema including befriending our fearless leader Char and the satisfaction of programming LGBTQ+ films for our community. 

CAC: How long have you been involved with Cinema programming? Can you share some highlights with us?

Brian: I’ve been programming films for the Cinema Arts Centre for as long as I can remember, probably at least 20 years, but most recently I’m programming for our new series, “Pride Cinema” which is an outstanding series of LGBTQ + films, speakers, cocktail receptions, and even free neck massage! Who could ask for anything more!  

CAC: What is your process for selecting films?

Brian: The process for selecting films is a good question. From attending LGBTQ + film festivals all over the country, to filmmakers reaching out, to word of mouth, I’ve collected a plethora of great films to show. The hard part is to choose just one per month. I’ve thoroughly enjoy bringing great films to our community, and I gain lots of pleasure listening to positive feedback from our patrons.  

CAC: What else would you like to say to our readers?

Brian: I’m looking forward to continuing bringing the Best of the best LGBTQ+ films and to entice a more diverse audience and of course an abundance of ticket sales! Our monthly event is held on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30. Please join our Facebook group at, “Pride Cinema” at the Cinema Arts Centre. The CAC is Proud to Be the Fiscal Sponsor of DEALERS - a film being made in Huntington

The Cinema Arts Centre is proud to introduce its members to a film being shot, here in Huntington, this November. DEALERS is directed by Huntingtonian Daniel Moya (whose film, 18 1/2 premiered at CAC).

DEALERS is a dark comedy that follows the lives and antics of a group of antique dealers trying to get by in an ever changing world while clinging to -and selling- the past. 

They're also looking for a home for a ten foot taxidermied grizzly bear.

The film will be shot in antique stores in Huntington and Northport, namely Rosie's Vintage and Funk and Swagger Antiques. The Thaler brothers, also Huntingtonian natives, are producing the film along with Daniel Moya from a screenplay written by Mano Cris, one of the founders of Industry (an art collective, music venue in town). 

The production is a true local venture, with crew, cast and creators all from Long Island. 

The filmmakers hope to raise most of the budget through grassroots efforts and the CAC is committed to complimenting this effort with its fiscal sponsorship of the film. That means that donations to the film are entirely tax-deductible and part of the contributions go directly to CAC.

The film's fundraising philosophy was summed up by its producers: "We should have a marketing campaign. It should read: 'You're already one in a million; just be one of two thousand.' If two thousand people contribute an average of $150 (which for many people is a lot of money) we can make a truly independent film - and we can make it locally. Instead of 'executive producer so and so' the title card would read 'produced by the people of Long Island'. That would be something to see."

The film will have its local premiere at CAC and contributors will be invited.

Moral Foundations and Dilemmas

Moral foundations refer to the fundamental principles or values that underlie and shape people's moral judgments and ethical reasoning. Moral Foundation Theory is often associated with the work of psychologists Jonathan Haidt and Jesse Graham who identified six basic moral foundations: Care/Harm, Fairness/Cheating, Loyalty/Betrayal, Authority/Subversion, Sanctity/Degradation and Liberty/Oppression.

Moral dilemmas are situations in which a person is faced with two (or more) conflicting moral requirements, none of which overrides the other, thus the dilemma is between right vs. right and wrong vs. wrong. The four main moral dilemmas are considered to be truth vs. loyalty, justice vs. mercy, short term vs long term, individual vs community.

For the second discussion of our “Skill Building Mixed Media Club”, we will come together to discuss moral foundations & dilemmas, and answer questions such as:

1. Which moral foundation(s) hold the most weight in your life? And why?
2. Is there a moral dilemma that you grapple with & can share, either with regards to a personal issue or a political one?
3. Have you asked anyone in your life about their moral foundations? Who would you want to ask and why?
4. What, if any, new insights did learning about the Moral Foundation Theory provide you?
5. Did any insights that you gleaned about your group or another group surprise you?
6. How, if at all, has learning about moral foundations & dilemmas impacted your way of seeing our political polarization?
