Mentor Recruitment Challenge
|
|
|
The 2nd Annual
Mentor Recruitment Challenge
is already underway. Thomas Sullard and Olga Berman currently tie for 1st place. Where do you place on the January 10th leader board? The top 10 mentors with the most points will be displayed every Friday throughout National Mentoring Month.
Missed out on week 1, but want to get in on the fun? No problem. Competing in the MRC is easy. Complete a challenge action, earn points. The top finishers win great prizes, but it really is the students who win.
MRC helps us find new mentors to serve the 251 students in our waitlist.
This week, consider putting a personal touch on your recruitment efforts. It's easy for potential applicants to make the commitment when they see and hear the passion you have for Power Lunch! Share a cute story about your student as a Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn post. Here's a story a mentor shared this week:
"Originally from Haiti, where literacy rates are extremely low, I’ve always felt fortunate to have had an excellent education in the US and to have really enjoyed reading as a child (and adult). I wanted to contribute to Everybody Wins DC for this reason, and 8 years later, I have mentored 4 different students from 2 different schools and have loved every minute of it.
I’ve seen my students show enthusiasm for books, improve their language skills, and show increased confidence when reading aloud. It’s truly been an enriching experience for the students and for me as a mentor."

The Book Project extends the power of shared reading from school to home by giving away
FREE
books to Power Lunch students to build their personal home libraries. Because access to books in the home is critical to successful reading development.
It also gives
FREE
books to other students and teachers to help support general shared reading activities. Last school year,
The Book Project distributed more than 4,000 books to students.
This year we want to do even more.
Help us fill our book depository at our new Power Lunch school, Walker-Jones and 11 other schools by hosting a book drive.
Anyone can host a book drive.
Book drives can be done through work, book clubs, fraternities,
sororities, church groups. You name it, it can be done! We provide all the materials you need, just send us an email.
