Children Ages 5-11 Now Eligible for the Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine
Ages 5-11 eligible for vaccine.
The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is now FDA authorized for ages 5 and up.
What You Need to Know About Vaccines for Children
COVID-19 cases in children can result in hospitalizations, deaths, MIS-C (inflammatory syndromes) and long-term complications, such as “long COVID,” in which symptoms can linger for months. Vaccination, along with other preventative measures, can protect children from COVID-19 using the safe and effective vaccines already recommended for use in adolescents and adults in the United States. The most common side effect was a sore arm.

No Shortcuts Were Taken in Creating or Approving the Vaccine
Decades of research gave us a head start to quickly create the current safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines. Clinical trials in children 5-11 required additional work and data over that needed for adult studies. Pfizer's data indicates that their vaccine is safe and more than 91% effective in preventing COVID-19 infections in this age group.

Smaller Doses
Children ages 5-11 should receive vaccine doses that are one third the size of doses meant for people age 12+. They should receive two doses spaced at least 21 days apart.

It's Free to Everyone
Getting a vaccine dose takes less than 30 minutes, and you’ll never receive a bill. No health insurance or ID is needed.

Delta is Different
The spread of the Delta variant resulted in a surge of COVID-19 cases in children throughout the summer. During a 6-week period in late June to mid-August, COVID-19 hospitalizations among children and adolescents increased fivefold. Vaccination can slow down transmission in schools and protect your child from serious illness.

Parental Permission Required
For children under 16, a parent or legal guardian must fill out the consent form. South Carolinians age 16+ can receive the COVID-19 vaccine without their parents' permission.
