It’s Ash Wednesday as I write. The season of Lent begins today. We enter 40 days (not counting Sundays) of preparation and waiting for Easter. Lent can be spent in many different ways: giving something up, taking something on, a commitment to write a note to someone each day, practicing mindfulness, prayer, or meditation, offering confession/repentance, listing gratitudes . . . honestly, the list is endless. The point is intentionality. We are on this journey of faith—together—but traveling at our own speeds, taking our own turns, asking our own questions, seeking our own paths to God. We do this in community, and yet it remains somewhat of an individual endeavor.

We have decided to return to A Sanctified Art for our Lenten journey. This is the resource we used last Advent to guide us in our worship and study. There’s a daily devotional guide, and if a few pages are too much to read, there are daily devotional cards for a quick reference point. There’s poetry and art, and help for worship planning. It’s really good stuff.

The theme for this Lent is “everything [in] between: Meeting God in the Midst of Extremes.” Here’s a brief introduction to this theme: This series, inspired by the Narrative Lectionary (Year 3), allows the Gospel of Luke to guide us through Lent. Beginning with Jesus setting his face toward Jerusalem (Luke 9:51), the series flows through several familiar stories—the Good Samaritan, Mary and Martha, the fruitless fig tree, the Lost Sheep, Zacchaeus, and more. Many of these stories are well known in both sacred and secular imagination, carrying cultural relevance and lore . . . Jesus’ ministry was rooted in relationships that disrupted the established social, political, and religious divides of his time. As modern readers, we sometimes lose the “shock factor” behind Jesus’ words, as his teaching tactics likely felt extreme for those in his context . . . This series is an invitation to navigate the polarities in our lives with more faith, intention, and openness to be transformed. Each weekly sub-theme explores two supposed binaries, like “faith & works,” or “rest & growth,” or “grief & hope.” We often consider these ideas to be opposing. However, as we explore these concepts within the Scriptures, we find nuance and complexity. We find that these dichotomies are false. We might begin to see a full spectrum instead of black and white. We might find that God is present in between.”

Let us enter this journey toward Easter with faithful, reverent attention to our relationship with God, that we might find God in every nook and cranny of our lives.

Youth Sunday - March 8

I hope you will join us Sunday, March 8, at 11 a.m. Our students (grades 6–12) will lead us in all aspects of worship as we remember that what we really need in this life is one another. - Caleb

Deacon of the Week

I’m Allyson Neeriemer, and my husband, Will, and I have been members at Park Road Baptist for over 15 years. We have three children: Emily, Claire, and Isaac. Most Sundays, you can find me up in the choir loft in the soprano section. I’m a former middle school math teacher and then stay-at-home mom. Now I teach preschool music at St. Stephen Methodist, and it is truly the best job in the world.

Spring is In The Air

The senior adults of the church are looking forward to the next VSP (Very Special People) luncheon on Thursday, March 19, at noon in Helt Hall. We will enjoy a delicious meal followed by a short program. Then Daniel Miles will entertain us. If you've never attended VSP, please give us a try. Where else can you get delightful fellowship, a good meal, excellent entertainment, and perhaps win a table centerpiece, all for $8?

Make reservations by noon Tuesday, March 17, by signing the list in Helt Hall on Sundays, calling the church office at (704) 523-5717, or emailing Max Carroll at maxhcarroll@gmail.com.

Staying Connected

It is good to be together. It is good to be connected. It is good to be in touch. And here’s a GREAT way for us to be more together, more connected, and more in touch. Almost one year ago, we launched our new online digital directory, accessible through the Realm Connect app or via your desktop browser. This directory is designed to enhance our church community’s connection, providing up-to-date contact information and fostering deeper relationships among members and regular attenders.

If you are not already using Realm, let us encourage you to do so. You can update your own contact information. You can add a photo of yourself (and your family), which always helps to put names and faces together. You can find people’s birthdays and contact information. Realm is a wonderful resource for us to be connected and stay connected. Becka (in the church office) is happy to help you navigate how to sign up and use this resource. Below, you will find more information to get started. Our goal is for every household to be using Realm as a means to build community together!

For a complete guide to the PRBC Online Directory, Realm, click here: https://conta.cc/4klbmw5 to read the PRBC Realm Launch email that went out last year. It includes a YouTube tutorial.

CDC Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day at the Park Road Baptist Child Development Center is one of our favorite days! It’s not about the chocolate or the roses. It’s about love and friendship. We celebrated with creative artwork, making Valentine cards for our friends and family, and ended the day by asking our parents to join us for a party. To add to our special day, we decided to make it a pajama day. Sharing love, eating party food, all while in our PJs — now that’s a perfect preschool day!
