Trusting…

Last week in Colossians 3:5 we talked about how following our evil desires is idolatry and that made me think of Judah. Judah’s idolatry was remarkable. They knew the Lord was God. How could they worship anyone else? They were hedging their bets. They needed the Lord for their afterlife because only the true God could raise them from the dead. But what about now? Pagan gods promised health, wealth, and fertility, so why not pray to them too, just in case?

Can you see how Judah’s idolatry is also our temptation? It's good to have talent, education, and money. But if we're not careful, we might shift our confidence to them. We know we will need God when we die, and we'll ask Him to bless us now. But we will also lean on these lesser gods, just in case.

Where is your trust? Back-up idols are still idols. Thank God for His many gifts, and tell Him you're not relying on any of them. Your faith is riding entirely on Him.

Shalom,

Mike W.

Please continue to pray for the Pastor Search Team to be unified and guided by the Holy Spirit in their task of identifying God's man for our pulpit. Pray that God will give the future pastor the strength and clear direction to leave his current ministry. Pray we ask the right questions that will make God's choice clear. Thank you for joining us in this quest.

  • Can you please pray for Catherine - they found a pea size tumor on the temple of her head. Pray for her whole family.~ Evan
  • Please pray for my sister Marlo and her upcoming surgery. Pray that it goes good and she has a speedy recovery. ~ Rose
  • Randall called and he is doing well. He said, "don't worry about me mom, Jesus has me." He said the day before he was arrested he prayed to Jesus and said he was tired of the life he was living. The next day he was arrested and was not upset, he was glad. Shantelle has a bed and will be leaving soon. Please pray for both of them; that they continue to look toward the Lord daily. ~ Bonnie

Pastor Search Update

I wanted to thank you personally for your prayers concerning our search for Mike Wilson’s replacement and reiterate the importance of those prayers for our success. The position is now listed on various Christian college and seminary websites. We have invited and had phone conversations with several potential candidates, but to date, have had only two applications. We are currently reviewing those applications.

At the recommendation of pastors Mark Hammer and Ben Smith, two individuals that know our church well from past associations, the elders approved the title change for the position from Associate/Successor Pastor to Lead Pastor. Both Mark and Ben pointed out that our goal has always been to hire a pastor to replace Mike, but we are less likely to find the right man by posting for an associate pastor.

By looking at the number of other churches that are posting on the same websites, it is clear that many churches are looking for pastors, but there are few applicants. This highlights the need for focused and sustained prayers. We covet your prayers.

WHAT WE BELIEVE...First Christian Church The Dalles is not affiliated with a denomination, instead choosing to be overseen by a team of elders. We consider the Bible to be the words of God, thus being incapable of error. As we seek a unified practice of our faith, we follow the teachings of the New Testament. We share communion each Sunday and follow the Biblical pattern for conversion. We support any who have accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord through belief, public confession of faith, baptism by immersion and continual obedience to Biblical standards of living. We hold firmly to essential doctrines but celebrate freedom in non-essentials as we seek to love God, love people, and make disciples who follow Jesus.
