Don’t Just Do Something, Stand There!
16 Rejoice always; 17 pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
I Thessalonians 5:16-18
A good friend of mine referred to verse 17 “pray without ceasing” to say sometimes we need to cease without praying. So many times we spend time trying to fix things we can’t, worry about things we don’t control and taking on things alone that Jesus want’s us to seek Him first. Those are times when we need to stop and pray. My friend in Christ was offering me a perspective for me to think long and seriously about. He knew me well as a high energy doer, fixer, “Here I am, send me” type but my friend wasn’t hearing me say much about my prayer life or seeking God’s direction. I was sharing (i.e. complaining) with my friend that I was busy for the Lord but nothing seemed to be going right and I couldn’t figure out what Jesus wanted me to do. So, I took his advice and restarted my prayer life. To stop and listen, to be still and know that He is God (Psalms 46:10)
If you find yourself in the same spot, a bit frustrated in your walk with the Lord, or just not hearing Him, cease without praying and refocus on prayer. Jesus is waiting for us, loves us dearly and want’s to be the center our walk with Him. I like to say to myself with some humor, “Don’t just do something, stand there!” … and pray.

WHAT WE BELIEVE...The Dalles First Christian Church is an independent governed congregation with elder oversight. Our roots are found in the Restoration Movement. We follow the Lord’s plea for unity. We support all believers who accept Jesus as Lord of their lives. We don’t consider ourselves the only Christians, but “Christians only”. We look to the Bible as the inerrant Word of God. We follow the New Testament in matters of faith and practice. We observe communion on a weekly basis and follow the Biblical pattern of conversion. Church members have exhibited their faith in Christ by belief, repentance, public confession of faith, baptism (immersion), and a continual faithful obedience to Biblical standards of living. We stand firm on the essential doctrines of the faith, but observe freedom in the non-essential areas of Christian life and belief.
