Council gear up for Australia Day

Council is encouraging residents to celebrate Australia’s rich cultural heritage and come

together at the Holroyd Gardens this Australia Day on 26 January 2021. Australia Day gives people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together and celebrate what it means to be Australian.

Enjoy a range of family-fun activities on one of the nation’s most loved holidays. As part of maintaining a COVID-safe event, crowd control management measures on entry and exit, compulsory registration and promotion of good hand hygiene, will be in place.

Granville train disaster

Forty-four years ago, 84 people were killed and another 213 injured when a NSW commuter train derailed and struck the Bold Street bridge near Granville railway station, just after 8am, in what remains Australia’s worst rail tragedy.

On that day, the Police Rescue Squad, Fire Brigade, Ambulance, volunteers, railway and other organisations responded to a rail disaster on a scale not seen before.

We remember the families who lost loved ones, those who survived, and the men and women who risked their own lives to save others.

I would like to thank the Granville Train Disaster Association and the Granville Historical Society for helping us commemorate those lost and those affected by this disaster.

As Mayor of Cumberland City Council, I am honoured to be part of the Granville community, and for those who lost their lives that day, we will ensure their memory lives on.

Parramatta Road upgrade

Works have kicked off on Parramatta Road and Cumberland City’s ‘back to the basics’ approach is being applied to one of Sydney’s busiest roads.

We are investing in the future of our city with a more accessible, safer and beautified environment in our part of the gateway.

This includes an extension of Auburn Park, improved pedestrian and safety across the Stubbs Street Streetscape and a pedestrian cycleway overpass on Melton Street at the M4 creating an access ramp, which will also meet disability access requirements.

Funding for the four projects has been provided by the NSW Government, as part of the Parramatta Road Urban Amenity Improvement Program.

How Council is supporting local business

Last week Mayor Steve Christou and Council staff visited businesses in Berala and provided information on COVID-19 testing clinics in a variety of languages. They spoke about the new regulations for businesses and their employees and the importance of adhering to public health directives.

We know this isn’t easy for residents, or businesses, but we urge you to come forward for testing if you have even the mildest of COVID-19 symptoms. Every person plays an important role in helping contain the spread.

Help us protect our community, your family, and your loved ones by being part of the solution.

It’s also a tough time for businesses, so help where you can by shopping or dining local. Whether it’s ordering in or shopping from your local grocer or chemist, it goes a long way during this time.

Mobile Recycling Service

Did you know Council has a mobile recycling service to get rid of all your hazardous waste the right way?

No matter where you live in Cumberland City, we come to you. The service collects:

Motor oils and cooking oils
Large batteries, such as car and motorbike
Household batteries
Paint
Mobile phones
BBQ gas bottles and fire extinguishers
Fluoro light globes and tubes
Smoke detectors
Electronic waste, known as E-waste, such as computers, TVs, DVD players, microwaves

Cumberland City celebrates one year

Last week Cumberland City Council celebrated one year of being named 'Cumberland City' with a small COVID-safe gathering in the main hall of the Granville Centre.

It's been a big start for Cumberland City, with staff working tirelessly to ensure the health and safety of the community are first priority, finalising our Australia Day event, and ensuring the ongoing high-quality delivery of services.

There’s a new way to Have Your Say at Cumberland City with the launch of Cumberland Conversations, Council’s latest initiative to involve the community in projects and ideas across the Local Government Area (LGA).

With Cumberland Conversations, you are invited to have your say on a range of Council projects, plans and policies that are currently on exhibition.

Your feedback will help shape Council's delivery of services, facilities and programs.
