An update on Coronavirus: Wear a mask, get tested if unwell

2020 was a big year and I want to acknowledge how far we have come as a community. The COVID-19 pandemic has been an unprecedented ongoing challenge, but one that has brought us closer together. I urge residents to closely follow health advice to help contain the spread of COVID-19. As you may be aware, several residents in our Local Government Area have contracted the virus in suburbs including Berala, Greystanes and Smithfield.

Please follow the NSW Government’s health orders and guidance. Practise good hygiene and wear a mask to protect yourself, your family and others. If you are not wearing a mask in certain areas like shopping centres, public transport, places of worship, you can be fined $200, on-the-spot.

Please get tested if you have any COVID-19 symptoms, such as a fever, cough, sore/scratchy throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of taste or smell, and self-isolate until you know your test result. For a list of local testing clinics, including the latest testing site in at Berala Public School visit our website. All ages are welcome. No booking or GP referral is required. Testing is free and no Medicare is required.

Many of our residents are from non-English speaking backgrounds. If you know someone who needs assistance, maybe they are a friend or a relative, please help them understand the importance of getting tested and encourage them to do so. The year that was and what's coming up

2020 was a big year and Council would like to acknowledge how far we have come as a community. The COVID-19 pandemic has been an unprecedented challenge but one that has brought us closer together. During the beginning of the pandemic, our Council rolled out new programs like Shop Local and free business webinars, to support businesses in the area hit hard financially. I encourage everyone to check out the resources on our website and explore ways to connect with these Council services and programs.

It was a pleasure to recently host our COVID-safe Christmas in the Gardens event at the Auburn Botanic Gardens and see families experience some Christmas cheer. Families and children enjoyed an exclusive screening of the Trolls movie in the beautiful outdoor setting of the Botanic Gardens.

Regardless of the challenges, this is going to be a great year for the Cumberland City community with several exciting projects underway, including the newly refurbished Wentworthville Pool and Granville Stadium upgrades. We look forward to seeing families and residents enjoying our services and facilities. Please remember to wear a mask when visiting a Council facility for the health and safety of the community.

Focus on new fathers

Focus on New Fathers provides a free text message service called SMS4dads for new dads and dads-to-be.

It’s rewarding becoming a dad. But regardless of whether this is your first child, or your family is expanding, becoming a dad can be challenging and sometime stressful. To help new dads and dads-to-be like you, NSW Health and the University of Newcastle have partnered to deliver a free text message based service called SMS4dads.

It’s free to sign up and once you do, you will receive tools, tips and helpful links directly to your phone – up until your baby is 12 months old.

Services Australia: How to protect yourself

If you are looking to get out of a violent relationship and need help with Centrelink, Medicare or Child Support, Services Australia have launched a page detailing how you can protect yourself.

The web page is available in more than 30 languages and features a ‘quick exit button’ to close the page and display another website, if necessary. Look for tab at the bottom of the page after you open it, highlighted in green.

New rules for businesses and customers

From 3 January 2021, people who enter or work in retail premises or business premises that provide good and services to the public who attend the premises are required to wear masks. For details, including list of places where masks are mandatory, visit the NSW Government website.
