A Message from the Mayor

Lunar New Year celebrated with traditional lion dance

Lunar New Year is celebrated globally, and Australia has one of the biggest celebrations outside of Asia, particularly in Berala where over 45 per cent of residents are from Chinese, Korean or Vietnamese backgrounds.

While Council didn’t run a street festival as we have in previous years, a traditional lion dance was a great chance to support local businesses that were impacted financially following the COVID-19 outbreak at Christmas.

The lion symbolises power and wisdom, and the dance is performed to bring prosperity and luck.

Council is committed to helping local businesses recover from COVID-19. Many local business owners have been requesting assistance and support to help bring shoppers back and I’m glad that Council could play a role.

PGA Junior Golf Pro Tournament coming this July

More than 100 golfers will get a chance to face off at the PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) Junior Golf PRO tournament this July as part of an event hosted by Cumberland City Council. It’s a great opportunity for some of our younger golfers to learn from pro golfers and share their love of the game.

The tournament will take place over two days at Woodville Golf Course and Auburn Golf Course. It’s going to be an exciting contest so watch this space for details on how to be involved.

Renewed focus on crime prevention

Our Council has been working closely with the local Police Area Command to investigate a recent driveby shooting in Auburn in Sydney’s west.

While this is typically a matter for NSW Police and state representatives, Council still has a role to play in keeping communities safe and as the local Mayor, I welcome a greater focus on

investigating and preventing crime in our area.

I do want to point out that Auburn is a very family orientated and peaceful community, which would never tolerate this kind of behaviour. We will continue working closely with local police and the community to help increase safety in the area and help keep our residents safe.

Roll up your sleeves for Clean Up Australia Day

We're inviting the community to come along to the Holroyd Gardens, Merrylands this Sunday and be part of a clean-up and free BBQ event.

Be the change you want to see and do your part in reducing litter. The clean-up will take place from 8.30am to 11.00am followed by a free BBQ to 11.45am.

According to the Clean Up Australia Day organisation, Australians produce 500kg of household waste per person, each year. That's more than 10kg for every single person, every single week.

Of the estimated 74 million tonnes of waste Australians generated in 2018-19, 43 million tonnes was recycled, leaving 27 million tonnes disposed of in landfill.

It's estimated about 130,000 tonnes of Australian plastic ends up in our waterways, parks and oceans each year.

Have your say on proposed planning for Granville

Cumberland City Council wants to hear from residents about how they want Granville Town Centre and surrounds to look and feel in the coming years.

We are placing a huge emphasis on planning for the future, making the area an economic hub with a mix of commercial, retail and residential spaces supported by better public transport.

We also think it's essential that we achieve all of this while preserving local heritage.

If you’re a resident, please provide feedback on the planning framework by 31 March 2021.

Learn to repair electronic household devices

Book this free online workshop to learn how to save money by repairing electronics and reduce items going to landfill on Saturday 20 March.

The Bower Reuse & Repair Centres will provide an introduction on household electrical maintenance and repair. The Bower’s experts will talk you through basic electrical theory and show you simple repair techniques to help keep your appliances and devices working better for longer!
