Message from our Executive Director, Jill Lynch-Sosa

I used to pray that God would feed the hungry, or do this or that, but now I pray that He will guide me to do whatever I’m supposed to do, what I can do. I used to pray for answers, but now I’m praying for strength. I used to believe that prayer changes things, but now I know that prayer changes us and we change things.”

-Mother Teresa-

Dear SSVP Friends,

Did you know that the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is essentially a volunteer run organization? We have over 500 active volunteers, many of whom are “Vincentians.” Vincentians are at the heart of the work of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and essentially are the service providers at our 31 conferences throughout the greater Omaha metropolitan area.

To become a Vincentian, interested volunteers learn about history of the Society, including the charism and spirituality of our Patron Saint, Vincent de Paul. All Vincentian volunteers are connected to a parish’s “conference,” with members coming from different backgrounds, occupations, incomes, and ages. The most defining characteristic of Vincentians is their call to be living witnesses of the love of Jesus Christ through service to the poor and marginalized.

SSVP conferences, located all over the city, help our neighbors in need right in their back yards. You see, we have every corner of Omaha covered, so that when a neighbor in need reaches out to us, we can respond quickly with compassion, dignity, friendship – and very often financial support. Our number one goal is to keep our neighbors in their homes, preventing them from falling into homelessness.

Volunteers also help staff our large food pantry in downtown Omaha. Consisting of both Vincentians and non-Vincentians alike, the volunteers at the food pantry are busy Mondays through Thursdays. Whether they are assisting neighbors who come to the pantry in need of food, or re-stocking the pantry’s shelves, our pantry volunteers provide assistance that is so very much needed by those in our community who live paycheck-to-paycheck, which is primarily who the Society serves.

But what about those who are already homeless? We help them, too! SSVP volunteers run our sack lunch program at our district office/Holy Family. They staff the Closet Door and give clothes to our homeless neighbors.

We also have volunteers who help out in our four thrift stores. On that note, did you know that your in-kind donations to our stores support the Society in so many ways? The net revenue from the sale of items goes directly to funding the previously mentioned programs. We also give many of the donated items directly to our neighbors in need. We also have partner organizations who reach out to us for support, and we share clothing and household items with them, so that they can also care for the neighbors who reach out to them.

One of the most impactful ways you can serve your neighbors is by donating your gently used clothing, furniture, and household items to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores. This may be especially relevant during spring cleaning! We’ll even pick up your large, donated items for you – or you can drop off your donated items at any of our stores.

So, if you are ever wondering how you can help care for your neighbors - there are so many ways! Depending on your time, ability, and/or financial situation, there is always something you can do. Donate your unwanted items to our stores, donate food to our pantry, make a financial donation to the district office, or join our network of volunteers!

In closing, I want to share my gratitude with you for the many seen and unseen ways you may already support the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Omaha. It is only because of the assistance that our volunteers and staff are able to fulfill the three main tenets of our SSVP mission, including: Growing In Grace; Friendship with Neighbors; and Offering financial assistance to them in their time of need.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Meet Vincentian Volunteer (and Top Hat Award Winner)

Mel Schrader!

Mel Schrader admits that he probably wouldn't look all that great wearing a top hat. As the most recent St. Vincent de Paul Omaha's "Top Hat Award" winner, though, Mel's thankful that donning an actual top hat is not a requirement.

Neighbor in Need - Efetilda's Story

Does the Society of St. Vincent de Paul really make a difference in the lives of our neighbors in need? Efetilda was so grateful for the "hand up" she recently received that she actually requested we share her story with everyone associated with SSVP Omaha. Efetilda is a single mom of three adult children.

Pantry Garden Still Needs “Angels”

Just a reminder that our SSVP Pantry still needs “Garden Angel” volunteers to help maintain our vegetable garden, located at 2101 Leavenworth Street. Volunteers plant, water, remove weeds and harvest the vegetables that are then given away in our adjacent food pantry. No gardening experience is needed. The garden’s volunteer schedule is from 8:30/9:00 until no later than 11:00 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays – through the middle of October. Again, if you are even thinking about becoming a “Garden Angel” volunteer, please contact Pat Slaven at mpslaven035@gmail.com. Pat can answer any questions you may have.

Many Thanks to the Intercultural Senior Center!

We’re feeling extra grateful for the workers from the Intercultural Senior Center's social work department who have set up shop at our Leavenworth Food Pantry!

Case Worker Jinping Liu and Social Worker Teresa Guzman, pictured here, kicked off the partnership on May 2, and Case Worker Nermein Markous will join in on later visits. Together, the three will be stationed at the pantry to help connect neighbors – aged 50 and above – with services above and beyond food from our pantry, including state benefits, social security, housing, legal assistance, and more.

The Intercultural Senior Center's mission is to improve the dignity, quality of life and physical well-being of seniors from around the world through advocacy, education, access to social services, and cultural enrichment activities that benefit the entire community. More information on the organization can be found here.

It is a blessing to have such an inspiring and caring organization working with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Omaha. Now, our neighbors can stock their kitchen shelves, as well as find a variety of additional resources they may need. Thank you, Intercultural Senior Center!

Amazing Joy of Giving Fundraising Day ...

On April 26th, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Omaha surpassed our fundraising goal and raised over $16,000 as part of the Archdiocese of Omaha’s Joy of Giving Day! When paired with the $10,000 matched by a friend of the Society, your donations amounted to over $26,000! We are extremely grateful to have raised that much money to support our Omaha friends and neighbors in need. Thank you!

... and a fantastic Do Good Days!

SHARE Omaha’s Do Good Days were held from Wednesday, April 19 through Saturday, April 22 – with this year’s focus on volunteering. During just those four Do Good Days, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul hosted 138 volunteers from Skutt High School, St. Patrick School and the College of St. Mary, along with many other individuals. In all, Do Good Days were very good, indeed. A big thank you goes out to SHARE Omaha for once again powering these amazing days to benefit non-profit organizations in Omaha! So, are you interested in possibly volunteering for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Omaha? Volunteer sign-up information can be found on our website at www.ssvpomaha.org/volunteer.

REMINDER: Our Thrift Stores Need Your Donations!

It’s that time of the year again - time for spring cleaning! If you find yourself cleaning an overly crowded storage room (or any other room with too much "stuff" in it), consider making in-kind donations to our SSVP thrift stores. Not only can you cut down on your cleaning time, but you'll make a positive impact on a family or individual in need!

Our SSVP thrift store staff will even pick up your larger, in-kind donations - like furniture, refrigerators, clothes washers and dryers and microwaves (if they're working and undamaged) - at no cost to you! Just call 402-341-1688 to schedule your free donation pick up. Donations can also be dropped off at any of our four store locations. Complete information regarding our SSVP thrift stores, in-kind donation pick-ups, and the kinds of items we can or can’t accept can be found on our website, here.

Save the Date to Stuff the Bus!

We need YOUR help to STUFF THE BUS! On June 1st, Omaha's WOWT 6 News will be hoping to fill multiple buses floor to ceiling with food items for the SSVP Food Pantry. You'll be able to donate at two locations: Methodist Women's Hospital and the Methodist Clinic at 8901 W Dodge Road.
