All handmade rug designs start as an 8'x10'. This is the size that they render the images in. From there the images are either shrunk or expanded.

The most commonly available rug sizes (all of which we carry in the showroom) are 6'x9', 8'x10', 9'x12', 10'x14', and 12'x15'. The further away a size is from 8'x10' the less likely the rug will be readily available. For example, if there are 1000 different patterns produced in 8'x10', there will be about 750 of those made into 9'x12's, 500 made into 10'x14's, and 150 made into 12'x15's.

There are smaller and larger standard sizes, but the most important thing to remember is the more random or obscure the size you are looking for is, the more likely it will need to be specially made. This takes 4 to 8 months, depending on the type and size.

These are all general rules, it is always best to know sooner than later if the rug size you need for a space isn’t standard. Extra time to have one made will give you the best chance of efficiently completing the best design possible for your client.
