Industry News

The US Travel Association, USTA has named Geoff Freeman as President and CEO. Freeman, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this new position. He previously held the CEO positions with the American Gaming Association and Consumer Brands Association.

A nine-member committee led a nationwide search to identify Freeman. U.S. Travel Association is the national, non-profit organization representing all components of the travel industry. Travelers in the United States are estimated to spend $1.1 trillion in 2022 (still 10% below 2019 levels).

The busy summer travel season is upon us. As airports are becoming more crowed and sometimes overwhelming, The Transportation Security Administration, TSA has a few tips:
  • Arrive early to airport
  • Remove small items from pockets/have travel documents in hand
  • Enroll in TSA precheck
  • Follow the 3-1-1 liquids rule
  • Contact TSA Cares for information on traveling with passengers, who have disabilities or medical conditions. 

Flight cancellations among US Air carriers have been creating an extremely busy summer travel season. Staffing shortages, fewer flights have caused major delays and cancellations.

Although COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, chaos continues at airports. According to flight-tracking service, FlightAware, U.S. airlines have canceled more than 21,000 flights, or about 2.7% of the scheduled total since the Memorial Day holiday weekend in May.

Travelers appear to be making up for lost time, after mass telework options affected the US workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic. Workcations have become a popular option for those looking to vacation while still working.

Blueground, and alternative accomodations company has a network of furnished apartments in 25 cities around the world. They have begun to see an increase in booking in 2022.
Meetings & Events

As business travel begins to pick up, other issues besides COVID-19 have become concerning. A Business Recovery Poll conducted by Global Business Travel, found that current affairs and the economy have had an affect on travel programs. These include, policies/restrictions, Covid infection rates, staffing shortages, supply chain bottlenecks, inflation and oil prices.

Travel suppliers are not totally pessimistic. More are hopeful now than in previous months. Bookings have also continued to rebound according to PhocusWire.
Accommodations & Hospitality

The recent pandemic has caused some hotels extend their spa services to include activities promoting mental health and well-being.

Throughout the US and abroad, this trend can be seen and appears to be having an impact on loyalty programs as well. The Global Wellness Institute forecasts that the annual growth rate of wellness tourism will be 20.9 percent, on average, through 2025.

The hospitality industry has recently seen a burst in using social media for marketing efforts. Virtual travel has also become popular, post pandemic. social media in recent years.

According Hotel News Resource, the social media platforms that are most effective include: Facebook, Instagram and Youtube.
Arts & Culture

As seen in the Hyattsville Wire: Earlier this month, residents of the Route 1 corridor were invited to help paint a new mural on an underpass at the West Hyattsville Metro Station and the effort was a big success. The colorful mural features organic and geometric shapes representing the area’s nature and wildlife.  

After a two-year absence, the Downtown Hyattsville Arts & Ales Festival returns on September 17, 2022! As one of the largest festivals in Prince George's County, it celebrates the best art, artisan craft, and craft breweries in the region. Actor and comedian JIMMIE "JJ" WALKER will host a meet and greet at Prince George's Stadium, home of the Bowie Baysox on July 15. Walker, best known for his role as James "JJ" Evans, Jr on the hit 70's show "Good Times", will be there to meet, sign autographs & take pictures with fans.

Food & Beverage

There’s a brand new winery along the Legacy Wine Trail! Two Lions Vineyards held their ribbon cutting ceremony last month. This addition makes a total of five wineries within the expansive southern corridor.

The Legacy Wine Trail promotes wineries in Prince George's County. Utilizing deep, dark soils and historic farms once dedicated to tobacco, these Southern Maryland wineries are creating a new tradition. Get out in the fields and get hands-on experience with the grapes that make these great wines.

Fofo de Chao, Silver Diner and It's Sugar will soon open storefronts at National Harbor. These establishments will join about 60 restaurants currently at National Harbor. Fogo de Chao will open a 12,000-square-foot restaurant at 141 National Plaza, while Silver Diner will open a 7,100-square foot restaurant on Waterfront St. in 2023.

The Real Milk & Honey Market and Pancake Factory opened in Camp Springs earlier this month. This stems from the popular all-day brunch restaurant chain Milk & Honey. The Real Milk & Honey Market and Pancake Factory is open Sunday through Friday at Restaurant Row in Suitland.
Community Highlights

Prince George's Memorial Library System has began construction on a new 22,000 square-foot public library. The Bladensburg branch will open in 2024, joining branches including in Hyattsville and Laurel. Two pieces of public art, will be housed at the library. A bowsprit-like sculpture at the entrance to the children’s section and nautical-themed wall art for the interior.

A new comic book store recently opened in College Park. Third Eye Comics took over the business from Big Planet Comics this past June. This is the seventh location for Third Eye Comics at 4744 Cherry Hill Road.

The Hotel at the University of Maryland has teamed up with OpenBarre, a fitness studio in College Park that combines Pilates, yoga and ballet, to host a summer wellness series. The summer wellness series will feature three classes for individuals of all abilities to experience barre and various offerings at The Hotel. Find more information and the schedule HERE
