Board of Education Holds a Finance & Budget
Session for the Community

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Board of Education opened its doors to the community, inviting those interested in learning more about the budget and finances of the school district.
The nearly two-hour long session was held at Central Office, and primarily focused on how the school district is funded overall, where the funding comes from specifically, and how it is spent.
Kellen Adams, the Superintendent of the Leavenworth School District, led the session, who many consider a leading expert on school budgets and explaining school finances.

McKinney-Vento’s Jessica Smith Shines at Summit for Homeless Students

McVinney-Vento Coordinator Jessica Smith recently traveled to Washington D.C., to advocate for the hundreds of students at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools affected by homelessness.
Smith, accompanied by Francisco Litardo and Laura Mersman, made the journey to the nation’s capital to participate in the National Summit for Youth Homelessness and Hill Day Conference.
It was a chance to speak up for the vulnerable group who often go unheard in the halls of power.
The conference, held on February 27-28, focused on youth homelessness and the barriers young people face every day- which often seem insurmountable.

Four students at Sumner Academy of Arts and Science are receiving the recognition they deserve following the hard work they’ve put in- all in the name of preserving history.
Neveah Williams, Ellie Jones, Canise Frazier, and Mariah Moseby were honored at the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools board meeting on Thursday, February 27, for their collaboration with Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC).
They teamed up with faculty researchers to help create an engaging and educational traveling exhibit, showcasing the history and legacy of Sumner High School.

Frank Rushton Students Honored at Board Meeting

A group of brave 4th-grade students from Frank Rushton Elementary School and their teacher received a thunderous standing ovation during the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools board meeting held on March 25.
Baraka Ruhumukiza, Ariadne Garcia Montoya, Caleb Orellana Solis, Vitali Kunakhovich, and their teacher, Peter Wetzel, were acknowledged for their courageous effort to champion a house bill at the state capitol in Topeka, Kansas.
The young advocates addressed state legislators hoping to pass House Bill 2330 in honor of Ruby Bridges, the young African American girl who was the first student to integrate a public school in the South.
| | An All-Female Team Makes History at State Chef Competition | | |
A five-member, all-female team, comprising of four seniors and one junior, competed in the Kansas ProStart Invitational on March 4-5.
Daniela Giron Morataya, Karen Flores Bautista, Kimberly Lopez, Miriam Lopez Villeda, and Rosario Suriano went up against 95 other students from across the state.
This was the first time that an all-female team from Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools reached this level of competition.
| | F.L. Schlagle Students Take First Place in KC Biz-Fest Competition | | |
F.L. Schlagle High School student Oscar Cervantes walked away with a $3,000 check after taking first place in the 2025 KC Biz Fest Competition.
The high school junior is the first student from Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools, to win such an honor in 21 years.
Cervantes and his classmates participated in the four-day event at the Regnier Center Building at Johnson County College in Overland Park, Kansas.

Argentine Middle School Students Serve as Pages at
the Kansas State Capitol

Six students from Argentine Middle School had the honor of serving as pages for Kansas Senator Pat Pettey and meeting Governor Laura Kelly.
The group of eighth-grade American History students made the journey to the Kansas State Capitol Building in Topeka, Kansas, on Tuesday, March 11.
Jaxson Ruiz, Luis Diosdado, Daniel Carreon, Mildred Perez, Aaliyah Ceron, and Alexa Torres Lozoya served as pages through the Kansas Legislature program.

A group of talented students and dedicated faculty from the Integrated Arts Program at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools proudly showcased their skills at a recent music conference in Wichita, Kansas.
The large delegation participated in the annual Kansas Music Educators Association Conference (KMEA) from February 27 through March 1.

Miss Tiffany was nominated by Teya Grigler, Katrina Pena, Tiana Cahill, and Jolynne Alonzo.
"Tiffany is an exceptional asset to the Health and SPED department. She is consistently going above and beyond," said Grigler.
"Her dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to ensuring smooth operation and adequate staffing does not go unnoticed. She approaches every challenge with a solution-oriented mindset," added Grigler.

Aaron LaMar - P.E. Teacher at Silver City
Mr. LaMar was nominated by Yvette Norris at Silver City.
"Coach LaMar has been our PE teacher for a couple of years. He is not only teaching students about health, wellness, and physical activities, but also our staff outside of school hours.
Many staff members seek him for advice and suggestions on healthy habits and workout tips," shared Norris.

An Extended Bridge Repair Project is Underway on
I-435 in Wyandotte County

Traffic Alert: Crews will repair and resurface multiple bridges on I-435 between the Kansas River and the Missouri River, in Wyandotte County.
The project includes patching and overlay work on the following bridges:
- Northbound I-435 bridge over Connor Creek
- Southbound I-435 bridge over Leavenworth Road
- Southbound I-435 bridge over Georgia Avenue
- Southbound I-435 bridge over Parallel Parkway

Southbound I-435 bridge over 98th Street
- Northbound and southbound I-435 bridges over Swartz Road
Work is expected to be completed by May 2026.

KCKFD PSA: Avoid Driving over Fire Hoses | | |
The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department (KCKFD) reminds motorists about the dangers of driving over fire hoses.
If there is a fire hose in the roadway, even if it is flat with no water flowing through it, DO NOT DRIVE OVER THE HOSE. Fire officials say to find an alternate route.
If that isn't possible, safely park your vehicle away from the scene and ask a nearby police officer, fire police officer, or firefighter to help you safely navigate around the fire scene.
| | New Security Measures at Downtown KCK Municipal Building | | |
Effective Monday, March 31, 2025, all visitors entering the Municipal Building (701 N. 7th Street, KCK) will be required to use the newly installed security X-ray machines at the two designated public entrances, located in the main lobby and ground level.
The installation of these X-ray machines is expected to expedite the security check-in process for visitors to the Municipal Building, aligning it with the Wyandotte County Court House security check-in process.
This new process will also eliminate the need for cumbersome hand inspections of all backpacks, travel bags, purses, and other similar items.
