MESSAGE FROM THE PROVOST

Excellence, Together

On my first walk across Georgia Southern’s campuses, I didn’t just see buildings. I saw momentum. I met students who spoke about their professors with admiration. I listened to the faculty share bold ideas for what’s next. And I felt something unmistakable: this is a place that doesn’t stand still.

It soars.

As we begin this academic year together, I want to say how proud I am to join a university that lives out its mission through people who go beyond—beyond expectations, beyond boundaries, and beyond the status quo. We are not just doing our jobs, but daring to lead, create, question, and grow. And nowhere is that more evident than in the Academic Affairs.

Across every college and unit, I see evidence of excellence in motion:

  • A biology professor mentoring students toward national research recognition.
  • Faculty embracing innovation in classrooms, online learning, and community partnerships.
  • Dedicated staff members who take pride in their work to ensure that the doors stay open and accessible for students.

These are not isolated moments. They are part of a story we’re writing together—one where academic excellence isn’t an abstract ideal, but a lived experience for every Eagle.

Throughout my career in higher education leadership—spanning continents, institutions, and disciplines—I’ve seen firsthand how academic excellence is driven by people. At Georgia Southern, it’s clear that our faculty, staff, and students are deeply committed to transforming lives through education, research, and service. From the classrooms of our colleges to the labs, studios, offices, and community partnerships across our campuses, the Academic Affairs is where the mission of this university comes to life.

That spirit of impact extends beyond state and national borders. I recently joined President Marrero and a host of academic leaders from Georgia on a trip to South Korea to experience first hand how we can support our partnership with Hyundai Motors. Our campus in Wexford, Ireland continues to host our faculty and students that enhances our global education and research.

We also recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Sri Krishna Institutions in India—a highly regarded institution recognized for its academic rigor and growing research enterprise. This partnership opens doors for our students and faculty to engage in collaborative research, global classrooms, and study abroad opportunities. In return, Georgia Southern offers Sri Krishna students and faculty access to a comprehensive, research-driven public university with a deep commitment to hands-on learning and global engagement. It is a mutually beneficial collaboration—and one that reflects our strategic focus on preparing students for a truly interconnected world.

My own journey has taught me this: excellence doesn’t happen by accident. It’s cultivated. It’s intentional. And it thrives when a university invests in its people.

That’s my commitment to you. This year, we’ll listen deeply. We’ll celebrate often. And we’ll work collaboratively to elevate student success, expand opportunity, and champion a culture where every voice matters.

Let’s soar—together.

Guiding Excellence: A Libraries Update

Georgia Southern University has made substantial gains in its Affordable Learning Georgia (ALG) institutional rankings across multiple categories. In 2017, Georgia Southern ranked 16th among USG institutions for student savings. According to ALG’s latest updates, Georgia Southern now ranks 4th, with total estimated student savings reaching $10,089,448 — a remarkable improvement in less than eight years. Additionally, Georgia Southern now ranks 2nd both in the total number of grants awarded (46) and in the total monetary value of those grants ($737,499). These achievements highlight Georgia Southern’s ongoing commitment to making education more affordable and accessible for our students.

The Georgia Southern University Libraries are working with academic colleges and partner institutions to implement game-based learning opportunities into the curriculum.

Game-based learning is a well-researched pedagogical strategy linked to increased motivation, improved knowledge retention, stronger collaboration, and the development of career-ready soft skills. At the Armstrong Campus, the Libraries are collaborating with Medical College of Georgia (MCG) on several gaming initiatives.

For example, the University Libraries will host weekly gameplay sessions this academic year for MCG’s learning communities to track their progress in developing skills outlined in the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Competencies for a Career-Ready Workforce.

Beginning with an escape room session in July, the incoming 40-student cohort will participate in gaming sessions throughout the year to collect benchmark data for a forthcoming longitudinal research study.

Third year clinical students also play-tested a palliative care simulator game Holding On: The Troubled Life of Billy Kerr, which simulates end-of-life care and decision-making. According to Dr. Elizabeth Gray, Dean of MCG’s Savannah location, students “...greatly enjoy these sessions and feel ‘more confident’ about building skills and working as a team.”

Data collected during these sessions was used to inform a research study design focused on integrating the game into the Community Health program at Waters College of Health Professions (WCHP). University Libraries faculty are currently collaborating with WCHP faculty on the early stages of the project.

Through these initiatives, Georgia Southern University Libraries advance student success, faculty teaching, research innovation, and community engagement. With strong evidence supporting its effectiveness, educational gaming will remain a focus of the University Libraries research, programming, and curricular support.
