Meet Nuttall's Cottontail
This little fellow is Nuttall’s Cottontail. They are the smallest species of rabbit in BC and one of the rarest in Canada. The South Okanagan is the only place in Canada with habitat for these rabbits to survive.

Nuttall’s Cottontail makes its home in grasslands, particularly on slopes and ridges with sagebrush stands. Its sandy brown fur does not change colour in winter so it needs areas with dry grasses to hide from predators.

Currently, Nuttall’s Cottontail is a federally-listed species at risk. The greatest threat to the species is habitat loss.

Nuttall’s Cottontail has been spotted in the Park Rill Floodplain, our priority acquisition project in the South Okanagan. We have until June 30 to raise the last of the funds needed to conserve this property and protect this priceless habitat forever.
Circle of Life Episode #3
Conversation on Conservation with Bill Merrilees
We feel privileged at The Nature Trust to be connected to some truly amazing volunteers.

Prominent B.C. naturalist Bill Merilees has broad interests in the natural sciences that include botany, marine biology and ornithology.

Today, as he approaches his 81st birthday he is still observing, writing books and articles and engaged in protecting nature. Since 1984, he has been leading the environmental stewardship effort that includes the expansion and protection of the Buttertubs Marsh Conservation Area in Nanaimo, B.C.
Bill shared his thoughts with us on environmental stewardship, nature, and his considerable collection of marine molluscs.
