Session 9-3: Data Mastering and the Cloud
By Prof. Michael Stonebraker, MIT CSAIL Adjunct Professor, A.M. Turing Award Laureate 2014

Data mastering is the process of unifying multiple independently constructed data sets about an entity, for example customers, suppliers, or parts. Every large enterprise has this information in data silos and must perform unification to get full value from their data.

In this talk, I argue that ALL mastering projects should move to the cloud for cost reasons. Moreover, I then argue that a software-as-a-service (SAAS) architecture is the most cost-effective cloud mastering environment. Furthermore, I argue that cloud-native solutions that use the underlying services of each cloud provider are the best path forward.  Lastly, there is invariably a real-time mastering problem as changes occur in enterprise data, and mastering solutions must deal with this issue. Lastly, often there is some text accompanying structured data in a mastering problem, and I indicate the best way to handle this issue.

Session 14-3: What AI Can Do For Data
By Prof. Tom Davenport, Babson College, Oxford, MIT

Data management has been one of the more labor-intensive aspects of the IT profession. However, some relief from artificial intelligence and automation technologies is already here, and more is on the way. Many companies have already benefitted from the use of machine learning to speed data integration. Other AI capabilities in the areas of data quality monitoring and improvement, data extraction, data cataloguing, data prediction, data synthesis, and other tasks are rapidly being introduced by various vendors. What are the implications of these offerings for how we structure and manage data within organizations? In this presentation, Tom Davenport will describe both the present and the likely future of AI-enabled data management.

Upgrade Your Professional Credential with a
Graduate Degree in Information Quality
The University of Arkansas at Little Rock offers an online Graduate Certificate. Dr. John Talburt has been working with the Graduate School to qualify the CDO-1 short program as part of the University's Prior-Learning-Credit Program. Under the proposed program, students could count the completion of the CDO-1 together with other professional experiences as a graduate course credit toward the Graduate Certificate. Students earning the PLC credit for CDO-1 would only need three online courses to earn the Graduate Certificate. Click here for details.
