January 13th will be the first scheduled docket for Outreach Court Alternative Case Resolution Options, at Haven of Hope. The city and county of Denver approached us to consider hosting an alternative method for clearing out the backlog of outstanding warrants in the homeless community. Many but not all of these are bench warrants issued when a person fails to appear for a scheduled court appearance. This is very common amongst our guests due to transportation challenges, lack of a phone, and fear of incarceration.
Outreach Court is designed to alleviate the barriers to resolving court issues as well as fear. Present at HOH for Outreach Court will be a Public Defender, a representative of DHS (Denver Human Services) and a representative of MHCD, (Mental Health Center of Denver), and Derrick Vaughns, our Program Manager. We are an approved site for community service, so if a guest is given community service, Derrick will be present to set it up.
MHCD will be available to participate as a Co-Responder for any guests with a mental health issue. It will also allow them to get the guest reconnected with MHCD treatment and team.
DHS will be present to assist the guest with any of the following:
• Directions and Descriptions of Employment Agencies and their Fields of Expertise
• Applications for Housing
• Directions for how to get connected to Medical and Mental Health Services
• Connection for Mail/Phone
• Connections to Financial Help, Child Support, Social Security Attorneys
• Acquiring Vital Docs
• Benefit Acquisition
We hope that by providing this level of support, taking care of business will become a positive experience and encourage our guests onto a more positive path.
