Chiefs’ Loss, Women of Steel, and Exciting SLC3 Events Ahead!
Dear SLC3 Members and Friends,
Well, that wasn’t the Super Bowl outcome we were hoping for! The Chiefs put up a fight in the end, but the Eagles took the win. While the loss stings, it was still an exciting season, and we know the Chiefs will be back next year!
On a brighter note, last week, the SLC3 team had the incredible opportunity to attend the Women of Steel Conference on Thursday and Friday. It was an inspiring and energizing experience filled with learning, networking, and team building. The event brought together powerful voices in the industry, and we were thrilled to connect with both familiar faces and new friends.
Speaking of voices, some of our members (Zia Gant, Allie Terbrock, and Taryn Pulliam) belted out some karaoke at the event! Great job, ladies! Investing in women’s leadership is crucial for the future of construction, and we were proud to be part of such an impactful event! Thank you to the AGC of Missouri for hosting this event for the third year!

Construction Industry Outlook 2025: A Year of Opportunity, Challenge, and Change |
As we move through 2025, the construction industry finds itself balancing on the edge of transformation and uncertainty. Innovation continues to reshape how we build, while economic pressures, workforce challenges, and shifting client priorities create a complex landscape. But one thing is clear—opportunity remains for those who are ready to adapt.
Economic Outlook: Mixed Signals, Strategic Moves
The global economy is sending conflicting signals. Some sectors are bouncing back, yet rising interest rates and fluctuating material costs continue to pose challenges.
Key Economic Factors to Watch
- Interest Rates & Lending – High interest rates are slowing new builds, particularly in residential markets. Developers are shifting toward renovations and adaptive reuse projects to navigate financing challenges.
- Government Investment – Infrastructure remains a bright spot, with funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) fueling major transportation, energy, and water projects.
- Labor Market Pressures – The skilled labor shortage isn’t easing, forcing firms to raise wages and explore automation to meet demand.
Hot Markets in 2025: Where the Action Is
Despite economic uncertainty, several sectors are thriving:
- Green & Sustainable Construction – ESG goals and regulatory mandates are accelerating net-zero and energy-efficient projects. Expect an uptick in green-certified buildings and retrofits.
- Infrastructure Boom – Roads, bridges, transit, and ports are seeing significant investment, with large-scale projects dominating the landscape.
- Data Centers & Logistics Hubs – Cloud computing and e-commerce continue to drive demand for high-tech storage and distribution facilities.
- Mixed-Use Developments – The evolution of urban spaces post-pandemic is leading to more integrated residential, retail, and office projects.
Industry Headaches: What’s Keeping Leaders Up at Night
While opportunities are abundant, key challenges remain:
- Cost Escalation – Material, labor, and financing costs remain volatile, squeezing margins.
- Supply Chain Uncertainty – While conditions have improved, critical materials like steel and semiconductors still face bottlenecks.
- Regulatory Pressures – Environmental laws, safety standards, and evolving building codes continue to add complexity.
- Skilled Labor Shortages – The need for trained professionals, from welders to project managers, far outstrips supply.
- Competing for Talent – Firms are getting creative with benefits and career development to attract and retain employees.
- Health & Wellness Priorities – Forward-thinking companies are taking proactive steps, from upgrading safety gear (hello, Type 2 hard hats) to tackling mental health challenges head-on. Suicide rates and opioid addiction remain pressing issues, and organizations are investing in education and support.
How to Stay Ahead: Turning Challenges into Opportunity
Embracing Technology
From BIM to AI-powered design tools, firms leveraging technology are gaining a competitive edge. Drones, robotics, and automation are no longer futuristic—they’re essential.
Public-Private Partnerships (P3s)
Collaboration between government and private industry is unlocking new funding opportunities, particularly in infrastructure and large-scale development.
Energy Transition Projects
Renewable energy construction—solar, wind, and battery storage—is creating new revenue streams. Meanwhile, aging coal plants are being replaced with gas-powered facilities, offering additional opportunities.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: St. Charles County |
St. Charles County, Missouri, is experiencing a notable surge in commercial development, attracting businesses across various sectors. This growth is reshaping the county’s economic landscape and enhancing its appeal as a prime location for enterprises.
Factors Attracting Businesses to St. Charles County
Several key elements contribute to the county’s attractiveness for business relocation and expansion:
- Strategic Location and Infrastructure: Situated at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, St. Charles County offers unparalleled opportunities for business expansion and relocation due to its business-friendly local governments, highly skilled workforce, first-rate infrastructure, low cost of living, and abundant community amenities.
- Business-Friendly Environment: Local governments in St. Charles County are known for their pro-business stance, providing support and streamlined processes for businesses looking to establish or expand their operations.
- Skilled Workforce: The county boasts a highly skilled and well-educated workforce, making it an attractive destination for companies seeking qualified talent.
Recent Commercial Developments
The county has seen significant commercial projects that cater to its growing population:
- SSM Health Outpatient Center (Streets of Caledonia) (GM: Tarlton): In October 2024, SSM Health opened a new 66,000-square-foot outpatient center in O’Fallon. This facility offers extensive imaging services, adult and pediatric urgent care, laboratory services, and a retail pharmacy, enhancing healthcare accessibility for residents. More commercial development planned include a hotel and mixed-use multi-family apartment/retail building. A First Community Branch was just built in Caledonia by Keeley.
- Commercial Expansion: The development of lifestyle centers such as The Meadows at Lake St. Louis has introduced a variety of specialty retail stores and restaurants, catering to the county’s affluent residents and meeting the growing demand for upscale shopping and dining options. The area continues to see many new facilities and retail/restaurants.

A Career of Firsts
Jackson’s impact extends far beyond the laboratory. She has spent decades championing diversity, inclusion, and scientific advancement in leadership roles, proving that Black women not only belong in these spaces but can thrive in them.
- In 1995, she was appointed Chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), becoming the first Black woman to hold this position. She was responsible for overseeing the safety of nuclear power plants and spearheaded critical reforms in regulatory policies.
- In 1999, she became the first Black woman to serve as President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), one of the country’s oldest technological research universities. Under her leadership, RPI experienced remarkable growth in research, funding, and innovation.
- She has served on the boards of Fortune 500 companies, including IBM and FedEx, advocating for increased diversity in corporate leadership.

Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson: A Trailblazer in Science and Leadership
During Black History Month, we celebrate the pioneers who shattered barriers and paved the way for future generations. While names like Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman are well-known, there are many unsung heroes whose impact has transformed industries and inspired countless Black women professionals. One such woman is Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, a physicist, researcher, and leader whose groundbreaking work in science, technology, and higher education continues to shape the world.
Breaking Barriers in STEM
Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson made history in 1973 as the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At a time when Black women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) were nearly nonexistent, Jackson’s perseverance in an overwhelmingly white and male-dominated field set a powerful precedent. Her research in theoretical physics helped lay the foundation for innovations in telecommunications, including caller ID and call waiting.
A Lasting Legacy
Dr. Jackson’s legacy is one of resilience, brilliance, and unwavering commitment to excellence. She has been a mentor and role model to countless young Black women pursuing careers in STEM, proving that no dream is too ambitious. In 2016, she was awarded the National Medal of Science, one of the highest honors in the United States, recognizing her profound contributions to the scientific community.
Her story is a reminder that Black women have always been at the forefront of progress, breaking down barriers and redefining industries. As we celebrate Black History Month, let’s honor leaders like Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, whose impact continues to inspire professionals across all fields.

Everyday Excellence, One Habit at a Time with Jeff Koziatek
Habit #7: Be Authentic
When you feel worthless, it is easy to hide who you are behind a mask of impostor syndrome. The cost of pretending can be:
- Burnout
- Presence
- Connected relationships
- Health
Choosing to show up as your core authentic self:
- improves problem solving
- yields more time, more energy, and better use of resources
- builds confidence, commitment, and deeper connection
- allows us to fully experience the present.
Remember:
It's okay to be you - to show up as your core authentic self.
Performance Tips:
- Grow confidence with core authentic action.
- Showing up as your core authentic self will attract people you naturally align with and repel the rest. It's a great way to qualify prospects, vendors, and partners.
