We would like to welcome our new Club President, John Bowen. John is the owner of Elite Diesel Service in Kemah. We are excited to have John move into the President role from previously being our 1st Vice President. John is an avid fisherman, dog father to 2 chocolate labs, Tater and Marley, and married to his wonderful wife Samantha Bowen. We would also like to thank Robert Rickett, our previous President for his many years of service and loyalty to our Club. Thanks Robert!
The Annual Strategic Planning meeting for the Board of Director's took place on January 30, 2021 where the Board discussed our Charitable Program Donations and upcoming events for 2021. While we still have some challenges to face with the pandemic, we are very hopeful that 2021 will be a better year for the Club with some great events and fundraisers headed your way! Stay tuned.

Last January, the weather only allowed a couple of opportunities for Texas Wahoo anglers to venture out, but over the past month we have had some extremely favorable conditions for this time of year. The lead changes have been frequent in the Winter Wahoo Championship with “Bad Cat” being in first place as of now with a 215 pound three fish aggregate after a recent trip with HBGFC member Joey Schiller riding along. Joey and his team currently hold the first, second and third place categories in the HBGFC annual tournament on their own boat Payczech as well. With a couple more months left in our Wahoo season there’s sure to be more changes in both of these leaderboards, especially if the weather continues to cooperate.

In September, we were informed by NOAA Fisheries that the recreational fishery had exceeded its quota of 250 blue marlin, white marlin, and round scale spearfish, as I wrote about in October. Apparently there was a mistake in the accounting of those numbers, and although we got close, we did not harvest 268 billfish as previously reported, but 233: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/atlantic-highly-migratory-species/2020-recreational-atlantic-billfish-landings-updates. It’s kind of unsettling that NOAA sounded the alarm bell so quickly when it was a mistake, but good news that we did not exceed the quota.
In other news, the amount of work our boatyards are seeing seems to be setting records, so if you haven’t yet scheduled your yard visit, get in line now, they are busy!

Club Awards Program Standings
|
Don't forget that you have 30 days to turn in your Verification forms from the day you catch/release your fish in order to be included in the Awards Program.
Please also note that we will be discontinuing our Gulf Coast Division from our annual awards program for 2021. From now on, all points received from boats departing from/returning to any port other than a Texas port will be considered the International Division.
If you've caught fish this year and want your points to count, please email your verification forms to info@hbgfc.com. Thank you!!
ON ANOTHER AWESOME NOTE....
We are adding a NEW DIVISION this year. Welcome the new "Weighed Swordfish Division" to the Awards Program. More info to come on our website soon!
