Dear Friend,
I am pleased to unveil our new strategic plan. Our number one goal is to protect 4,000 acres by 2022, and our number two goal is to steward and restore our protected properties using a strong science-based approach.
WCLC is also working to engage more people to help achieve our mission because people are our foundation! I am delighted to welcome Pam, Dan, Amy, Cody and Todd to the WCLC family. They bring exceptional leadership and science, and they are passionate and committed to land conservation. Please help us in welcoming:
- Pamela Angst, Board of Directors
- Dr. Daniel Carter, Amy Barrows, and Cody Ziegler, Land Acquisition Committee
- Dr. Todd Levine, Carroll University Professor and Educational Partner
Consider coming to WCLC's Annual Meeting, where you can meet even more kind, giving people who are dedicated to the environment. It’s open to the public, and reservations are $50 per person with a delicious dinner included. Learn about Waukesha’s globally important oak ecosystem with a presentation by guest speaker, Aaron Feggestad.
Thank you for your support and commitment to land conservation!

Get ready for spring!
Join us at Martin's Woods
|
|
Spring has almost arrived in Wisconsin, and that means spending more time in the great outdoors! Martin’s Woods preserve is a beautiful State Natural Area that needs your help—garlic mustard and dame’s rocket are threatening the sensitive natural communities on this stunning preserve.
What better way to give back and to get outdoors than to join us on one of the most diverse preserves in Waukesha County? Consider coming to invasive removal workdays:
· Saturday, June 2
· Saturday, June 16
Other weekday dates will be scheduled in the near future. The Benjamin Goss Bird Club is also planning to have a spring tour of the preserve, so stay tuned for these extra opportunities to get out there!

|
We want to send a huge thank you to Bill Reichenbach for helping lead our volunteer workdays at Martin’s Woods. If you would also like to become a volunteer stewardship leader, email Meghan Wersel, the conservation manager, at mwersel.wclc@gmail.com.
All volunteer days and spring tours on our preserves can be found on our Facebook page and website. Please note these dates are subject to weather conditions.

Mussel Bio Blitz Makes Science Fun!
|
|
A mussel
BioBlitz
is where trained volunteers will inventory mussels in the Bark River at our Hartland March Preserve. This opportunity is for a limited number of volunteers who must attend the training and be able to wear waders while walking in the Bark River.
This is an amazing opportunity because freshwater mussels are one of the most imperiled groups of animals on the planet, with 70 percent of the world’s mussel species in decline. In Wisconsin, more than half of the fifty-one native mussel species are endangered, threatened, or listed as a species of concern, according to the Wisconsin DNR. Wildlife surveys help identify where these populations are located and how healthy they are, which allows us to determine the correct land restoration activities to help those populations to thrive.
This summer, the WCLC will be working with Dr. Todd Levine of Carroll University and some of his students to help us identify and catalogue different mussel species on the Bark River and Scuppernong Creek as part of our National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant.
If you’re interested in joining us for this volunteer opportunity, please contact Meghan Wersel, the conservation manager, at mwersel.wclc@gmail.com.
Thank you, Todd and all of the educators who selflessly give their talents and time to develop our young professionals and future environmental leaders!
