What do you seek in life?

Joy, knowledge, abundance, transformation?

As I get older, questions such as "What do I seek in life?" come to mind more frequently.

This new series of Martin Hsu mythology takes us on a journey of self-exploration in pursuit of insight, joy and wisdom through whimsical characters, magnificent creatures, and majestic beasts.

All we need to do is follow Lucky, the black cat!

"The Keeper of Abundance", 12 x 16" acrylic on wood panel

Did you know black cats are considered to be lucky in Japan?

"The Seeker of Delight", 12 x 16" acrylic on wood panel

You're invited to follow Lucky into a fantastical wonderland, where they cross paths with ethereal and auspicious creatures to connect, heal, listen, and look within.

"The Muses - Bringers of Joy", 20 x 20" acrylic on wood panel

It feels so good to tell a cohesive story by creating a collection of works featuring original characters—

like my muses, the goldfish mermaids!

"The Sage - Beholder of Wisdom", 20 x 20" acrylic on wood panel

Curiouser and curiouser?

Alice in Wonderland was a big inspiration for this series. I've always loved Alice's encounter with the Caterpillar, where he offers advice that helps her further develop her understanding of herself and those around her.

"Her Luminescence - The Moon", 12 x 36" acrylic on wood panel

I absolutely love these feathered ladies. They are Goddesses who help us thrive and heal with sunshine and moonlight.

The Moon, an iridescent white peacock, is a beacon of light and rebirth.

"Her Radiance - The Sun", 12 x 36" acrylic on wood panel

The Sun, a brilliant golden phoenix, is a source of warmth, growth, and life.

"The Dream Maker", 24 x 48" acrylic on wood panel

Last but not least, I am thrilled to debut this glorious tigress as the centerpiece!

The Dream Maker

"She who wanders through the silence of our dreams,

Beyond the reach of time and the grasp of space,

Where the mighty peonies bloom with whispers of wisdom,

Moves with a grace that bends the stars.

Her gaze is a river, flowing deep and clear,

Touching each heart it meets, soft as dawn's light,

Bringing joy where sorrow once lay,

And weaving wonder into the fabric of night."

(poem created in collaboration with ChatGPT!)

And I got to drive all my babies down to LA this past week to have them custom framed for the show.

Many thanks to the gallery and the framer for having us!

Truth be told, the last few months have been challenging both physically and mentally. I've learned that painting 8 to 10 hours a day is not as pleasurable as I want it to be.

Though I am grateful that the constraints also taught me new ways to trust in myself and enjoy the process.

Above all, I am so proud of and in love with these new paintings and cannot wait for everyone to see them.

I would love to hear from you so please share your thoughts.

I hope to see you on opening night!

With love and gratitude,

Martin
