Announcing PATF's new Mini-Loan Pilot Program for 2021
|
|
2020 has brought unforeseen challenges to all of us, as individuals and also collectively as a community. At Pennsylvania Assistive Technology Foundation, we have made significant changes to how we operate this year to continue to meet the changing needs of the people we serve. With this in mind, we are thrilled to announce a new one-year pilot program starting mid-January, 2021!
Currently our Mini-Loans cover amounts between $100 and $2,000. Starting mid-January, our Mini-Loans will be available for amounts between $100 and $7,000 with no interest and no fees.
What does this mean? Based on the number of loans we typically extend for assistive technology in the $2,000 to $7,000 price range, we project that we will be able to help 90 more people this year with no-interest, no-fee Mini-Loans so they can purchase such devices as hearing aids, stair glides, and smart home technology, all while building their credit with every on-time repayment.
As always, we will continue to go the extra mile to provide compassionate, individualized assistance for people of all ages, disabilities/health conditions, and income levels, including those who might not qualify for a traditional bank loan. Applicants must demonstrate the willingness and ability to repay the loan.
Stay tuned for more details in early January!

Smart Homes for the Holidays: 6 Ways to Use Your New Smart Speaker for Greater Independence
|
|
Smart home technology is earning an important place among the ranks of assistive technology. There are a variety of devices and seemingly endless configurations that can increase independence, productivity, safety, and health both at home and elsewhere. People with disabilities and older adults are using these technologies to control their environments (lights, fans and thermostats), access entertainment (TV, music, and internet), monitor their homes (video doorbells and video services), and control who can enter (smart locks and door openers).
But, while complex smart-home setups with multiple devices are impressive, don’t forget that the humble smart speaker can be powerful all on its own. These little virtual assistants – such as Amazon Echos, Google Nests, or Apple HomePods – can help you stay organized and connected. And, with all of us spending so much time at home these days, what better gift this holiday season than one that makes day-to-day activities at home easier?
Whether you are the lucky new owner of a smart speaker for the holidays or you have had one for years, here are six ways you can use your virtual assistant to improve your life without any extra “smart” equipment:

Watch: PATF CEO Susan Tachau is Honored at AARP Purpose Prize Award Ceremony
|
|
On December 3, AARP recognized the 2021 Purpose Prize Award recipients and fellows in a live streamed event. AARP’s Purpose Prize is the only national award that celebrates people 50-plus who are using their knowledge and life experience to solve tough social problems.
During the event, our CEO Susan Tachau was presented with her award, and she shared her purpose in co-founding this organization:
"If you want to really make a difference in our lives, believe in equity. Believe in justice. People with disabilities should be a part of our communities."
Included with Susan's story are interviews with two of our borrowers, Jessica Marquez-Gates and Garvin Schaffer, who shared their experiences with PATF and the difference their assistive technology has made in their lives.
The virtual event was hosted by award-winning journalist Lisa Ling. Golden Globe® Award-Winning Actor Glenn Close was presented with an honorary Purpose Prize Award for her work with Bring Change to Mind, a charity dedicated to confronting, head-on, the stigma associated with mental illness.
