Hello Wayne,

Welcome to our FIRST email newsletter--our new format for getting the best, most engaging, and "PAWS"itive News to you. We will soon be phasing out our print newsletter in order to save critically needed funds for our shelter animals. We look forward to hearing your thoughts regarding our fresh new way to share "what's happening at RHS" with you.

FUN DAYS FOR SHELTER DOGS

Ramona Humane Society volunteers can now sign up to take shelter dogs out of the kennels for the day or for a sleepover. This gives the dogs an opportunity to leave behind the day-to-day boredom and stress that can afflict some of our longer term residents. Volunteers can take the dogs on hikes, to the beach, or to the volunteer’s home for a sleepover--like Ollie had. He enjoyed a day at Volunteer Lina's lush home pool (see photo). Read the full story about how these types of outings and Fun Days are helping our staff find better homes for our shelter animals and learning more about their behavior.

FROM KENNEL DOG TO SUPER DOG

Melissa and her family knew Piper--who they renamed Niki--was the dog for them. "It was love at first sight" she said. Melissa wrote to tell us that Niki is a wonder dog. Not only has she fit in perfectly with her siblings and surrounding, she has turned in to a bit of a super dog. They started teaching Niki tricks and basic training. After only one week with Melissa, you won't believe how far this wonder dog has come. We credit Melissa's hard work as well as the Ramona Humane Society's Kennel Enrichment program that helps make our dogs more adoptable by our staff and volunteer's efforts socializing, training, and engaging with our shelter animals until they find their forever homes. Check out Niki's tricks below.

KENNEL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS BRING FUN & HAPPINESS TO OUR SHELTER ANIMALS

We have instituted several programs here at Ramona Humane Society focused on giving our shelter animals some fun time away from the shelter.  Read about two of these programs (Doggie Fun Days and Walk to the Park) elsewhere in this email.  Our third program got help from local Target store employees who brought toys for our animals.

BOGART'S LESSON: NEVER GIVE UP HOPE

Our mission to find forever homes for any adoptable animal in our care was severely tested with Bogart. Although one of the sweetest, most beloved dogs in our shelter, Bogart was ignored or passed over by shelter visitors looking to adopt. When we reached FIVE months at the shelter, we wondered if we'd ever be able to find him a family. We are happy to report that, in March 2022, after nearly six months, Bogart finally got his forever home.  His new family is giving him all the love he deserves! Thank you Bogart, you taught us never to give up hope !

OUR FIRST EVER "KITTEN SHOWER"

Every year at this time, our shelter is inundated with unwanted kittens.  We call it "Kitten Season".  The arrival of so many infant kittens puts an incredible strain on our resources and staff.  To help us face this crisis, we held a shower for the new arrivals and asked our community to help us out with gifts for the babies.  Read about what happened by clicking the button below.

WALKS TO THE PARK GIVE SHELTER DOGS AN OPPORTUNITY TO STRETCH THEIR LEGS AND STRUT THEIR STUFF

There's nothing like a Saturday stroll with your pooch!  Unfortunately, many shelter dogs don't have anyone to stroll with...not until now that is. Ramona Humane Society has instituted “walk to the park” days. Volunteers choose a dog from the shelter and walk to the local park with other dogs and volunteers. The walk provides exercise and enrichment to the lives of the dogs as they get exploration away from the shelter.  The program is also helping make our dogs more "adoptable" by training them to walk well on a leash.

Volunteers learn about the dogs they have been working with such as how they may react to loud noises, or other canine encounters. Finally, our community members see the dogs and can ask questions about them which could lead to adoption.

ABANDONED CALF FINDS LOVE AND HAPPINESS AT RAMONA HUMANE SOCIETY

Didn't know that the Ramona Humane Society saved all kinds of animals other than just dogs and cats? Meet Omi. While doing regular rounds in our community this last February, our animal control spotted a newborn calf tied up on the side of the road. The crew sprang into action and got the calf to safety at the Ramona Humane  Society shelter. After several weeks of veterinary care and staff support, Omi has found comfort and safety here at the shelter. As an "Open Admission" shelter, Ramona Humane Society provides any homeless animal with a place to live until we can find them a new home. Omi, however, plans to live his life here at the shelter where he has found lots of friends. Just check out the videos below to see how happy Omi is here.

CAN'T ADOPT A FULL-TIME PET? BE A FOSTER! SERIOUSLY...WE NEED YOU!

We are desperate for foster parents who are willing to give a temporary home to extra needy animals. These are animals that are too young or too susceptible to disease or injury to be sheltered at our kennels. When you volunteer to foster, you are agreeing to provide temporary care in your home to currently unadoptable animals until they are in an "adoptable" condition.
