With August upon us, One. is pleased to announce the third official vacation week in our company's history!
One. will be closed from August 5-10th so that both Jennifer and Christina can have a full week off.

Thank you for your support and enabling us to recharge our batteries this month.

Laughter literally is the best medicine.
When we laugh, besides releasing endorphins that lift our mood, in addition, it activates the transverse abdominis, one of our primary lumbar spine stabilizers, thereby giving you a core workout without even trying!

Avoiding Ticks and Lyme this Summer
If you want to avoid DEET and other pesticides but still protect yourself from Lyme disease, there are many essential oils that repel ticks.
The castor bean tick:
Repelled by Dorado azul
, also known as pignut or bushmint and traditionally used as mosquito repellent. The terpene known as alpha-humulene was the most repellent terpene found in the oil; you can buy both the
oil
and the
humelene
.
The cattle tick:
The deer tick:
Here’s a cool
video
showing ticks trying to climb a person’s finger that’s been dipped in nootkatone.
Nothing is 100% guaranteed to repel all ticks. In fact, many of these oils show 50-60% effectiveness in the field. But if you use a combination of relevant essential oils, frequent tick checking, smart clothing choices (long socks, shoes/boots, pants), and avoidance of tick-heavy landscapes (tall grass, oak leaves, etc, notwithstanding these new breeds that apparently love short grass), you’ll be in good hands—or at least better hands than the naked guy rolling around in piles of oak leaves.
And if you’re really worried, you could always tuck pants into your shoes, then spray the shoes and lower section of your pants with
peremethrin
, an insecticide that kills the ticks as they climb before they can reach your flesh. Use a dedicated pair of pants and shoes that you don’t use for anything else and reapply each time you go out. A light spray on the outside of reasonably-thick pants should provide tick protection without actually putting the pesticide into contact with your skin.
Some natural tick repellents and pesticides include: 2-undecanone from the essential oil of wild tomato plants, garlic oil, mixed essential oils (rosemary, lemon grass, cedar, peppermint, thyme, and geraniol),
nootkatone
, and fungus (Metarhizium brunneum/anisopliae). Refer to the CDCs website for further information on proper use of oils.
Foods to repel ticks-Grapefruit
Grapefruit is known as one of those summer fruits that everyone loves. It contains a compound known as
nootkatone
. Studies show that nootkatone is very effective at repelling not only mosquitos but also ticks, which is why scientists have used grapefruit as a means to fight the increasing spread of Lyme disease, as well as other tick-borne illnesses.
As of now, there are no studies that advise how much grapefruit is needed to repel mosquitos. Nevertheless, you’ll lose none if you add grapefruit to your daily breakfast or dessert. The best part about this is that you can eat grapefruit and, after eating it, you can use its peel and rub it on your skin for the same purpose of repelling mosquito. (avoid grapefruit if you are taking a statin due to drug interaction)
